40mm NBC Mask Filters...Cheap

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

FYI friends....I know some of you have bought gas masks considering the possibility of NBC events (...rather hope not but...). This is what I found on filters.

The least expensive source for a decent C-2 rated 40mm filter which will fit NATO, Israeli and US mask using this format filter is the Israeli filters available from Sportsmans Guide (another "Northern" group company) at www.sportsmansguide.com. Their price on a case of 12 is about $28. I spoke to customer service there today and they confirmed these were fresh, sealed, israeli C-2 rated filters. The filters contain a charcoal layer and fiberglass HEPA filtration, built to NATO specs.

I had ordered 20 from CTD a week ago (for $4.97 each), got my order today (lotsa other stuff) and the invoice said they've discontinued that item. Just as well, since the day after I made that order I got the catalog from SG listing the filters for $2.34 in cases of 12. Am assuming these will be fine but will report any issues when I receive the 3 cases I ordered.

Don,
I went to the site Sportsman Guide and
could not find any filters only the masks.
I used their search but found nothing.
How did you find the filters?

My previous response keeps popping in and
out. Sportsman Guide has replacement
filters for $4.95 but I can't find the 12
for $28 dollar deal.

okay.....I'll have to get you the catalog number...it was in catalog L99P, bottom of the page under the Israeli mask. I called and confirmed they were in stock and also talked with customer service re specs on the filters (Israeli, sealed, C-2 spec, NATO, etc.)...DCK

How long do the filters last?

Don,

Thanks for the nudge. With evrything else I'm trying to remember to purchase, I'd forgotten gas masks. Just placed my order with SG. He was able to find the masks and the filters from the catalog number you indicated. No one should have a problem. Thanks and God bless. Mary

The Sportsman's Guide part # on "12 pk extra filters" in this catalog is L99P-15782 for $27.97 plus S&H which their shipping table lists at $7.99. Haven't inspected these yet (had ordered a sample before my CDT order fell thru; it's sitting at the Post Office) but should be able to report on these by Wednesday. The customer service guy said all the right stuff (C-2, NBC, 40mm NATO) so I believe these will be just fine. Don't know who makes them (IMI Maybe) but my experience with Israeli merchandise has been good.

BTW....Filter life, out of can varies. Don't have info at hand but basically it's 1-2 years (if you never wear it and live in a vacuum), 15 days daily wear no exposure, hours from exposure, to minutes if contaminated with pathogenic blood. All of this subject to reality; if there's a lot of dust the HEPA medium will plug. The carbon layer can also be saturated so there's multiple considerations involved.

Got one of my SG orders including the "sample filter" I ordered to test. Looks good but I'm going over to a friends house and saw it in half on his bandsaw to be sure it's as speced.

Don or others -- I was a bit discouraged to scope out the thread on the other forum which suggested that there were umpteen different filters that would be needed for umpteen different hazmat scenarios. Say what? Oops, kids, we put in the wrong filters .... never mind!

Help!

BD....For our purposes their really is only one filter to consider that being the NATO standard C-2 Spec filter with a 40mm thread designed for NBC environments (oops, that's assuming your mask accepts 40mm cartridges). These don't really come in many different flavors. The manual I have on these states that they won't filter out ammonia or carbon dioxide. Yes, their are specialized elements for other mask formats but not for the masks using 40's.
