Thunderstorm, Oregon Cascades

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

Time was near dusk, and we were moving fast to get down from a high ridge before any of the growing thunderstorms came our way. This storm was easily 15 miles across. It remained active until late in the evening. The top of Three Fingered Jack, a 7,840 foot volcano, is visible on the right side of the picture.

Olympus XA-2, Fujicolor 200.

Were you the still photogragher for the "Independence Day"? Nice shot...

Amazing what the "right light" can do! This must be incredible enlarged to a decent size. Were you "lucky" enough to get any shots with lightning in the frame?

Very Nice!

Just another "amazing!" comment

Very nice. What do you think about doing this as a panorama? Cutting out most of the blue sky about half of the dark foreground.

Agree with Jeff and Billy - this needs to be cropped to a panorama and blown-up to mural size. The detail in the red is spectacular!

Takes the forum to a higher level.

Thanks for the nice remarks. This was definitely a "right place & time" picture; we were hunting the elusive wapiti, and this picture was just a grab shot using a camera I carry for such emergencies. Since a few people suggested cropping it to a panorama, I rescanned it and did so; the result is at:

I can't say I'm impressed enough with the difference to prefer it. My original crop was to the proportions of the Windows screen, so it can be used as wallpaper. That necessitated cropping the sides a bit, but considering how raggedy the tree on the right is, I like it gone!

Very nice, I like the dark outline of the trees, it adds to the feeling of an approching storm and help accentuates the clouds, I like the extended dark foreground which adds to the mood of the picture, you are right about the ragged one on the right. Pat
