Chat Room

The chat room is open to all who use this forum, as well as prep forum and Humpty Dumpty.

Recently, there has been a problem with "cloning" - that is, taking someone elses name and creating mischeif, using their identity. The reports that I have are this has been done by someone who goes by the name of "Evil Polly". One would presume that this is one of resident polly trolls, but just like the nice young man down the street who turns out to be the mass murderer everyone is looking for, there are no givens.

Since this chat room applet doesn't give the kind of control that I would need, to ban the person, there's precious little I can do about it (Other than, of course, wishing the offender to suffer a plague of fire ants in his/her undies). Just be advised, that if you see someone behaving totally out of character, there is a very good chance, that you're not talking to who you think you're talking to.

If you've experienced a problem with more than one midi playing at a time, over the past week, the problem is now fixed.

Gotta confess. All day long I've been acting out of character.

Bokonon,

It is really a cool area, I will just have to get used to the "format"... Chat rooms have never been my forte....I will visit from time to time though...

Hi Boko,

Thanks for the chat room, but I can't use it. That's because I refuse to allow Javascript access to my computer.

Is there another way to access the room, or is there a good IRC chat around?

Dean,

I hate to have anyone locked out, but the chat room is a little java applet provided by Deja. Anyone who registers for Deja, and sets up a web page can plotz a chat room onto their site. Deja does not give anyone who would use the applet, much in the way of control. Basically, I can change the font and border colors, the size of the window, and I can give it a title...that's about it, for my "control" as chat room "moderator". I'm not aware of any non-Java way of accessing the room.

You are aware aren't you, that Java can be turned on and off? You could turn it on to access the room, and then erase the contents of your Java Console, as soon as you leave.

Dean, I started #TimeBomb2000 on Efnet several months ago and populated it with seven friends and bots to maintain control. So far, nobody's been visiting. It's mainly intended to be a backup measure, in case of some heavy handed breakup of this forum. To use it, pick up a copy of any IRC software. My personal favorite is at http://mirc.stealth.net/download

Meanwhile, Bokonon's chatroom is the place where everybody seems to be gathering. It doesn't require the users to download any special software or learn anything. I visited there a time or two and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
