Transferring pictures to laptop

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I recently purchased a digital camera and I have heard the stories about how long it takes to transfer images to your computer VIA a cable. I know that there are flash card readers for a parallel port....but my question is this....I have seen advertised a PCMCIA flash card adapter for notebooks....you slip the flash card into the PCMCIA card and then insert it into your notebook computer. Is this another way that the pictures could be transferred? The reason I am asking is because it is cheaper than a parallel port reader. Thanks!!!

If you have a notbook computer the CF to PCMCIA Adapter is the way to go. The adapter can be bought as cheaply as $6 to $7. The CF card mounted in the adapter and plugged into the PCMCIA slot shows up in "My Computer" as another disk drive. File transfer is faster than any of the other methods - Cable, USB, or Parallel.

I paid $10 for my adapter. They were out of stock on the cheaper ones. It really works nice. I then transfer the photos to my desktop via a 10meg network card. I can do this double transfer in less than 5 minutes for 32meg of photos.

Works great. Recommend it!

I just got a Kodak digital camera for Xmas. I went looking for a USB flash card reader thinking that it would be the best way to transfer photos to the computer. They were completely sold out and backordered since December 17. I bought a flash card adapter for my PCMCIA slot on my notebook and it works like a charm. It cost $12.00 and fits all flash cards. It works just like an extra drive and it very fast.
