European Millennium trips alert By Robert Uhlig, Technology Correspondent

TOURISTS and business travellers should avoid Germany, Spain, Switzerland and several other European destinations for a period from five weeks before Christmas until the end of January, says a Millennium bug watchdog.

Taskforce 2000, a watchdog set up by the Conservative government but now independently financed, said it issued the warning because of continuing uncertainty about other countries' preparations for the date-related computer glitch predicted to crash some computer systems and electronic devices. "There is the possibility that, when overseas, travellers could be exposing themselves unnecessarily to disruption and inconvenience, even to some risk to their personal safety," the watchdog said.

It rates the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain and Switzerland as being at serious risk of disruption. Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Greece, Iceland, India, Ireland, Japan, Holland, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey are judged to be at risk, but with a plan in place to complete Millennium bug work by New Year's Eve. China, Denmark, Egypt, Hong Kong, Israel, Sweden and Britain have been deemed low risk.
