camcorder vs digital still camera

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am looking to buy high resolution digital camera and a friend suggests I buy the Canon Elura camcorder instead, at a rather hefty price of $1300, which will give me "fabulous stills" plus lots of other features. Looks like the pixels are rather limited on this camera. Does that matter? Thanx....

Pixels Count!

Of course it really makes a different why you want still images. If your need is to view in on the computer then you might come ok. Buy if you are looking for 8x10 or 11x14 pictures you might be disappointed.

Of course you did not say what the pixel count was. Many experts say that you need 300 pixels per inch on photos. I have been happy with less but if you are only getting 640x400 or 320x200 then the experts will suggest a 2"x1.5" print is what you should expect.

You can't use it as scanner either. At least not and expect quality results.

The elura does not give "fantastic stills". When you try to print out the pics you will cry. If you mainly want still pics get a still pic digicam. :)

Benoit, that was the funniest reply I've seen in a while ('you will cry'). Valid response and thanks for the smile.
