OREAD -- November 1999

The OREAD is the unofficial e-mail newsletter of Orienteer Kansas. There is also an OREAD home page at www.geocities.com/colosseum/field/7306. Both the home page and the e-mail newsletter are edited by Michael Eglinski (meglin@juno.com).

DECEMBER 4-5 WEEKEND OF ORIENTEERING

OK and PTOC are sponsoring a weekend of orienteering. On Saturday, OK is hosting a short event (shorter than normal courses) at the Woodridge area of Clinton Lake. The Woodridge meet will also be the Kansas Championships. On Sunday, PTOC is hosting the third Possum Trot. The Trot is a longer than normal event (although regular courses are also available).

Saturday night there will be some sort of social event -- probably a pizza dinner in Kansas City.

WOODRIDGE EVENT

The event will be on a new map of the Woodridge area of Clinton Lake (look for detailed directions to the meet site in the December OREAD). Registration will be at 11, beginner instruction at 11:30, and starts will be at noon.

Raymond Wren will set the courses. There will be advanced, intermediate and beginner courses. The advanced and intermediate courses will be shorter than normal (winning times around 30 minutes). This should make the orienteering a bit different and keep the participants from wearing themselves out before the next day's PTOC event.

All are welcome, but only those who qualify as Kansas Champs eligible can be declared Kansas Champs. To be eligible you must meet one of the following two criteria: (a) be a member of a Kansas-based O'club (i.e. OK or PTOC) (b) have lived in Kansas for at least 3 consecutive months some time during the past 25 years.

We will need volunteers for the event (Raymond is committed to setting the courses and I am working to finish the map). We could especially use help with beginner instruction and registration. If you can help, let me know (meglin@juno.com).

THE POSSUM TROT

The Trot will be at Blue and Gray Park. The long event will be about 15 km with a mass start at 9 a.m. As with previous Trots, Mike Shifman will set the courses -- look for this event to be a tough challenge.

To run the Trot, you need to enter by email or phone by December 1. Contact Dick N. at 913-888-1528 or rneuburger@worldnet.att.net.

In addition to the long event, PTOC will also have normal courses.

More info is availabe at: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/RNeuburger?PTrotIII.htm.

OTHER COMING EVENTS

November 6 -- PTOC is hosting an event at Longview Lake. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and starts are at 11. One of the bridges in the park is closed -- so you need to follow signs carefully to start area from Raytown Road.

November 21 -- PTOC is hosting an event at Tall Oaks Camp (near Linwood, KS). Registration is at noon, starts are at 1.

Info on PTOC events is available at the Possum Trot web page: http://members.aol.com/PTOClub.

WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON?

The Fall season is under way. PTOC has been hosting events and OKers have been travelling all across the country.

Check out the OK discussion pages on the internet for lots of details (maybe even more than you wanted). To get to the discussion page, go to http://www.geocities.com/colosseum/field/7306 and click on the discussion page link.

Don't have web access?

No problem. You can subscribe to the discussion by email. To do that, send a message to meglin@juno.com. Tell me you'd like to subscribe and I'll sign you up. Once a week, you'll get an email with all of that messages that were posted during the prior week.
