When does this go into effect?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

My tabs are due at the end of this month 11/30/99. If I don't drive my car for the month of Dec., and renew my tabs 1-1-00 will they be only thirty bucks? I don't want to pay $286.00 if I don't have to!

Hello Mark - I don't have an answer for you but I am in the exact same situation - although my tabs are scheduled to expire on December 21st! I was thinking of getting a 10-day trip permit or, like you, not driving. I have a feeling that if tabs expire the gov't will require a new inspection and emission check. Still would be worth the big savings though (for me, it's $400).

Please let me know if you get a solid answer. Thanks!

I too am in limbo as to wether I have to pay the full three hundred dollars after Dec. 1 when my tabs expire, or if I can wait until January and only pay thirty. I was under the impression we can wait. It was aproximately three weeks ago in the Sunday edition of the Tacoma news Tribune that it was quite clearly stated this is a very real and vey legal option. The only danger is driving with expired tabs. Good luck!!! Please let me know if anyone finds a solid answer. Thanks

Your tabs are due the date that is on your registration, my Honda Civic tabs expire on Dec 1st, it would be illegal for me to drive my Honda after that date if I don't renewal, so I decided to use my other vehicle, I thought initially that my tabs would be good until the end of Dec. but found out that is not true, the state will probably encourage its law enforcement agencies to stop anyone with vehicles whose tabs are due in the month of Dec. Who knows what these "greedy" politicians are up to now.

As long as you do not drive your car after your tabs expire you will not have to pay the current 2%. It is not unlawful to park your car until after Jan 1st. It will only cost you the $30 if you can wait. Of course, If you take a chance and get caught driving with expired tabs it will cost you $71. Mine expire at the end of November as well.

Hey Mark, hold onto your cash. I now know for a fact that you only have to pay thirty dollars plus the liitle extras, if you wait until Jan. 1. It doesn't matter how much your tabs were or when they expired. The fact of the matter is, 695 takes effect on Jan 1. and all government agencies have no choice but to follow the law. You may wonder how I'm so confident of this, so I'll tell you. I happened to be standing in line today to get tickets for the Disney on Ice performance and as luck would have it, I was standing next to an office manager for the D.M.V. We began talking about 695 and before the end of the conversation he had produced an intra-office memo stating exactly how the D.M.V. was to handle all car tabs and any other fee that was covered by 695. The bottom line is, if you wait until Jan. 1 you will save a bunch of cash. I'm now in the posession of this memo. If you or anyone else would like a copy leave your fax number and I'll send you a copy.

Yep, Life Liberty and Property, I don't know what country that was founded in those principles, name escapes me.

IF someone can take the intended use of any item which is your property, earned with your labor, then who ever it was has then stolen your property when you cannot use it as intended. The state motor vehicle act was intended to regulate "drivers" and "operators" that used an automobile or truck for the purpose of "carrying" "passengers" or "property" belonging to others for hire. The term for an automobile or truck used for that purpose is call "a vehicle"(RCW 46.04) Therefore to "drive" a vehicle IS A PRIVILEGE on the roads of this State that do belong to the people of the State. (It is the duty of the state(Constitution) to see that those in commerce moving property of others or passengers to ensure the safest arrival.)

If on the other hand YOU "use" your AUTOMOBILE or TRUCK for yourself and family, guests and friends YOU are using the roads as a matter of Right. It is your duty to see to it that your family and friends along with their property are kept safe. THAT IS FREE, no excise(a tax for a privilege)

I don't know about others but I'll be damn if I will continue to pay tribute for a privilege and a contract for that privilege that I am not party to. Excuse me while I maintain the welfare of my family with my earnings, and do my part to keep government small.
