East Bay Nonprofit Year 2000 Conference: "Y2K for Non-Profits: It's not just about computers. It's about people."

The City of Oakland's Y2K Community Preparedness Partnership (CPP), Office of Emergency Services; Alameda County's Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disasters (CARD) and the Bay Area Chapter of the American Red Cross are hosting an educational conference for nonprofit organizations regarding Y2K planning and community preparedness. We are inviting your executive and program staff (as well as administrative and technical staff) to attend this event, for any part or all of the day.

East Bay Nonprofit Year 2000 Conference November 12, 1999, 10 a.m - 4 p.m. Masonic Building, 3903 Broadway in Oakland

This event is being co-sponsored by CARD's lead agencies in Oakland: Catholic Charities of the East Bay, La Clinica de la Raza, the Spanish-Speaking Unity Council, and it is being coordinated by Oakland 2001, a member of CPP. In addition to updates of local, state, and national efforts, we will be offering workshops and resources on the following topics:

Communicating with clients and community about Y2K preparedness -- We all have a responsibility to contribute to preparedness efforts. Y2K is an opportunity to promote basic earthquake preparedness, which can be helpful insurance for any potential disruptions.

In addition, greater awareness about Y2K among the population at large can help spur much-needed last-minute remediation efforts by small businesses, doctor's offices, schools, etc. (Info on the urgency of this need is available on the U.S. Senate's website at http://www.senate.gov/~y2k )

Contingency Planning for Non-Profits-- How to create and test contingency plans to ensure that your organization can continue to perform its core functions in a variety of circumstances, and provide essential services to clients.

Remediation for Non-Profits -- We will have information and resources available for everyone. We will also have volunteers on hand who will be offering assistance with non-profit remediation. However, depending on the need and availability, we may need to prioritize volunteer assistance to those organizations providing critical services to vulnerable populations.

Please RSVP by faxing the attached form to us so that we can have a sense of how many lunches will be needed. Also, please feel free to bring information to share with others.

And, if you have any sister organizations in San Francisco, please let them know that the City of San Francisco will be hosting a similar event for non-profits on the same day. For more information on that event, you can contact Christiane Hayashi at 1-415-554-5692.
