VCD maximum length?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

One stupid question: Is the absolute maximum lenght of VCD 74 minutes or could there be 80 minutes VCD's?

My software (winoncd & EZ Cd Creator 3.5c) does not recognize cd's longer than 74, so I ask myself why there is 700 MB disc's if you cannot use them properly. Or are they just for audio purposes...?

I have burned video-cd's on 80 minutes cd-r's containing up to 78 minutes of video. I have also burned a video-cd in overburn mode up to 80 minutes(I use single or double speed to burn, otherwise the player somethimes does not see the final minutes on the disc ad simply stops).

Hopes this helps

Yes there are 80-minute CD-Rs; when you use them with, for example, Easy CD 4, the appropriate time length is displayed. Unless you load these CDs the default display will always be for 74mins. The most reliable way of finding out the exact length is to go to the properties tab on CD Copier, for instance, and note exactly how many blocks a blank CD has. A 74min CD is rarely exactly 74; I've done an audio CD that run for 75.10 with a Samsung 74 min. CD-R, but with a Sony XO it says overtime and refuses to record.
