FAA to announce ALL major airports Y2K ready

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Just heard (2:00 EST) something on CBS radio news, kinda heard, before I noticed, the FAA will announce today (?) that ALL (their word, not mine) major airports are OK. I think the number 565 was used.

Just pointing it out, don't shoot me! Link should follow...

Tick... Tock... <:00=

Same garbage the Soviet Union used to dispense thru PRAVDA! Which I have just learned is translated to mean "The Truth!" Washington might as well fire Koskinen, get rid of the White House press corps and borrow Saddam's talking head Terik Aziz (sp?) How America swallows this "drivel" I will never know!

This comes from the "Integrity in Government Service" department and is not just a rumor: Ray Long, head of the FAA's Y2K program was once fired {"quit or we'll make you wish you had..."} by the Agency for selling insurance on company time, on the company phone, when he worked as a supervisor at the terminal in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Thanks Hoff, ya saved me the trip! Boy that was fast. What are you doing up at this hour? Are you sure you don't work for the FAA, and this post set the alarm off? (grin).

Anyway, I just got back from the FAA site myself looking for info on this. Got stuck reading Mead's recent testimony again.

Very interesting... Tick... Tock... <:00=

Good luck with your project sir Hoffmeister.

I've got to crash. I passed out on the couch when I got home, and I'm not tired now, but I should get a few more before work. See Ya! <:)=

QUESTION: Has FAA implemented all their upgrades?

JOEL WILLEMSSON (GAO): No. We testified last week that STARS would be implemented through December and January. We testified to our concerns on this. Not all new systems are in, by a long shot."

Does anyone have the link for the above quote? Someone had typed out the entire question & answer session about a week ago on one of these threads.

This is from the Reuters link, saying everything is AOK.

"On June 30, the FAA, the Transportation Department arm that polices the aviation industry, said all its own systems -- including air traffic control -- were ready for the century date change."

In the link I'm looking for, I believe Joel Willemsson was specifically asked about this. As I recall, he said they were wrong ... and explained why.

This GAO report contains the details behind all of the snippets in the Q&A:

http://www.gao.gov/ne w.items/ai99285t.pdf

In it, Williamsen makes clear the GAO's concern regarding STARS is not that it is required for Y2k readiness, but that the scheduled implementations in December and January may disrupt already compliant systems, and cause further problems. The same reason virtually everyone is in "freeze" mode until after the rollover.

I found the link I was looking for:

JOEL WILLEMSSON (GAO): "The FAA said it was compliant June 30th, and what we sampled was all OK. But, then we found there were 967 systems changes later that were not checked, plus 200 in progress. The FAA will track these, but it is important to get the word out [about the need to check changes]. Another important issue is to do as much end-to-end testing as possible in the time remaining. The FAA, most of its 21 systems are not end-to-end tested yet.

Speakers: Janet Abrams (the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion) AND Joel Willemsson (General Accounting Office)

From the Reuters story:

``We reliably know'' that U.S. airports are able to operate their existing security systems and have workable backups in case of any computer failures, Flynn told the briefing.

This should be interpreted as "contingency plans have been implemented and work still continues on the system faults."

OK, GOT IT?

CONTINGENCY PLANS.

If you don't believe me, go to the nearest big airport and look for new Porta-Potties popping up next to formerly automated systems.
