Just bought a DVD player, and according to my research NONE of the current models from Sony (at least the models carried by Best Buy and Circuit City in St. Louis) play Cd-r. This appears to be because all manufacturers except Phillips and Pioneer have gone to Single Laser Pickups (Pickups that can and have actually ruined CD-r's) to save a few bucks. Problem with the Phillips is it doesn't convert PAL disc content to NTSC for viewing. The Pioneers do.

Actually Steve, that's not right, I have a Sony DVP-S500D and mine plays cd-r vcds very well. In fact, my Sony allows me to burn non compliant vcds with a higher data rate up to 2200kbps. This results in a shorter time limit but much higher quality. What a lot of people are having problems with is the media they're using sometimes will not work properly and if the vcd made was burned at greater than 1x, it will not work properly. I've also read somewhere in this forum that someone was able to do this with a Sony DVP-7710. Hope this helps.
