question of debate

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

I just finished watching a debate on I 695 and I hope the people who don't want this to pass can respond to me. One of the things that really bothers me is that i keep hearing that the fees for our tabs has dropped by 20% from the previous year. THATS A LIE!!! go out and grab your registration and look and see how much it dropped. not very much. #2 I want to know why we should pay based on what type of car we drive, if anything the older cars should pay more because of their pollution and lack of safety that they bring to the roadways. As far as I have noticed most of the people who are against I 695 already pay $35 a year or are big companies who are afraid that they might get taxed a little (which should be another issue on the ballot) #3 When this passes be happy... the money will be there its only a 2 percent cut from the whole budget, the legislature has dealt with worse.

My guess on the 20% is that the AVERAGE car tab payment dropped by 20%, or $30. I haven't heard these figures, but if they're saying "it dropped by 20%", it is a lie. I think that a study showed that the average MVET tax bill, er uh, vehicle registration fee was somewhere over $100. 20% still sounds a little high, because lemme see, *click*click*click* $30 = 20% of $150. Well, actually, I believe that it was around $150 for the average driver. The problem is, the statement, left alone, constitutes a lie, or a large deception in the least. Now, if they say MVET taxes dropped an AVERAGE of 20%, then that would be a more honest sell job. So that may be where they get their figger of 20%.
