Hyatt's bboard is down

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Since many of the members of Hyatt's bboard come here also, I thought I'd let everyone know that the board is experiencing some technical difficulties. Mr. Hyatt is aware of them and the tech support people are working on it now.

Unfortunately, it looks like we have been hacked. Someone has taken control of the board, changed the Administrator and Moderator passwords, and is systematically deleting the threads in each forum. Unfortunately, none of us can get right now to stop him. We have a call into our technical people, but they are not working on Sunday.

-- Michael Hyatt (mhyatt@michaelhyatt.com), October 31, 1999.

Michael,

Do you have a back up of your archives and/or web site? You site has some very important prep information. I would sure hate to see that lost.

Sincerely, Stan Faryna

-- Stan Faryna (faryna@groupmail.com), October 31, 1999.

Thnx for telling us, I got really concerned seeing the threads counting zero - we'll wait till it gets back to work

-- New-Born (wingcom@tin.it), October 31, 1999.

I don't know if our web master backs up the discussion group. If not, we have lost a lot of incredible information.

Regardless, I am confident we can track down the hackers. I will prosecute to the full extent of the law. If anyone has any leads for me, I'd be grateful if you would e-mail me.

-- Michael Hyatt (mhyatt@michaelhyatt.com), October 31, 1999.

Unfortunately, we'll witness increased hacking during Y2K, and the destruction will cost untold million$ to fix.

-- Randolph (dinosaur@williams-net.com), October 31, 1999.

Michael,

Sorry to hear that.

That's a very "low" action on the part of some hacker.

Diane

-- Diane J. Squire (sacredspaces@yahoo.com), October 31, 1999.

Michael,

You may want to contact your ISP and find out if they do daily back ups of your web site. In the event that there is a back up on tape, you don't want the deleted and hacked site to replace what's possibly on tape right now.

Sincerely, Stan Faryna

-- Stan Faryna (faryna@groupmail.com), October 31, 1999.

Get real, call the ISP and have them shut it down or disable it somehow. At least get them to put up a trace on the router or a tcpdump or something.

-- hamster (hamster@mycage.com), October 31, 1999.

Yes, I just managed a post on Announcements that went through. However, when I went to repost on "Water" a website that has lots of info, as well as "Food" that I had a website of recipes, I was told that my password was incorrect. I will mark these in my <3 spot, and repost later.

Will we need to re-register? I'm so angry I could spit nails.

Just seems like a strange way to hack a machine, isnt it easier to just blow away files or directories. Even if you cannot get into it at that level isnt it easier just to delete groups rather than do it this way.

Is is possible some kind of "prune" program is going nuts and aging messages based on a incorrect variable.

I just think a hack would be more forceful rather than a purge which takes down message by message.

Hasnt this board been going through similiar bizarre behaviour over the past few weeks.

-- hamster (hamster@mycage.com), October 31, 1999.

Michael, plese let us any updates on the board! Many of us have emailed discussions to others so we might be in a position to help with all the information gathered.

-- Ruth Edwards (REath29646@aol.com), October 31, 1999.

Please help Michael if you "notice" anything odd. I've been in e-mail contact with him. This is real.

*Very Big Sigh*

Michael although I am sorry to hear about this event, I do have to ask about your statement "Regardless, I am confident we can track down the hackers. I will prosecute to the full extent of the law...". Do you plan on completing this endeavor before Dec 31, 1999 or do you plan on continuing this event into the year 1900? Do you now think the courts will not be full due to lawsuits regarding the y2k bug? Or if you plan on having the person arrested and thrown into jail, have you insured that they will be sent to a facility in which the jail doors will not be swinging open on midnight 01/01/00? I could go on, but I will spare you.

-- Butt Nugget (catsbutt@umailme.com), October 31, 1999.

Michael, you are in my thoughts.... I HATE hackers. Unprofessional SOB's that give computer professionals a black-eye and a bad name. Immature boobs. Putz's (sp?)

May they all rot.

-- Dennis (djolson@cherco.net), October 31, 1999.

Methinks somebody was "hacked" with the prep board. Maybe they were banned? I'm praying for this situation to be resolved ASAP!

-- Spence (ls9364@mindspring.com), October 31, 1999.

Michael

So sorry to hear that. You have a great board. I pray that these shameless perpetrators be caught!

-- Ray (ray@abc.com), October 31, 1999.

You know, Butt, I'm sure you think you're a very clever guy. Some things, however, cross boundaries and should not receive a tacit tip of the hat such as you just did.

Did you chuckle when that Egyptian flight went down today? Did you smirk when the two young boys were killed several months ago in Washington? Are you gleeful when a woman is raped or a child molested?

You're an asshole, and it's more obvious now than ever.

-- Vic (Roadrunner@compliant.com), October 31, 1999.

No, I found no joy in any of those events or speculative occurances. Did you find any joy in these events? How are these events even related to Mr. Hyatt.
I think what you are trying to imply is that I find it humorous that it appears Mr. Hyatt's bboard has been hacked. To answer this question - no I do not think it is funny at all. I do find it ironic though that Mr. Hyatt has written much about the potential chaos on and after Jan 1st, and yet he intends on prosecuting these vermin 'to the full extent of the law' at this late date. I ask these questions to Mr. Hyatt in all seriousness.

Michael:

Can you keep us posted on what (even who) you track down? This is seriously bad.

-- Flint (flintc@mindspring.com), October 31, 1999.

Sorry...Mr. H

Would love to think your bboard problem is a..coincidence. Noticed a few other things coming down, or maybe it's just my computer. Trying to show a friend a note in Naval War Academy(?) (Sen. Barnett info) saying people going on line to Y2K survival info sites and etc. will be called "The Wild Herd". That's no longer in there.....

Lifted my eyebrows to be generally labeled by the government. My response was, as opposed to what ? "Dumb Tame Cows?".

You know, if Y2K is going to be really bad, then there's nothing anyone can do to save everyone...how else could the government handle it ?

And those guys giving you a bad time on here.. I think the people doing this name-calling thing (hoarders, dooms day sayers, nuts) other than the government...are the most afraid of all. To them, it can't be true - it's too ugly. They won't plan, if it goes - they'll be in trouble.

And - does anyone know who is hiring the celebs on CNN to enforce the polyanna plan? I mean - who paid Wayne Newton ?

Good luck and keep going. Nana

I moderate a forum on the Hyatt site. Thankfully,we have been able to save a lot of the information. Hopefully we can reconstruct many of the threads. Thanks to those who are offering to help. We may call on you.

-- Lsmith (dwsmith7@bellsouth.net), October 31, 1999.

Has anyone checked to see if there's been anyone gloating over at the biting stinging polly board?

-- Ron Schwarz (rs@clubvb.com.delete.this), October 31, 1999.

Ron:

As of midnight EDT I hadn't seen any reference to the Hyatt bboard problems on "Debunking Y2K" (Doc Paulie's board).

I'd be surprised if they did "gloat", because whatever else you think of debunkers they don't advocate censorship (and what is hacking but the most virulent form of censorship?)

-- Johnny Canuck (j_canuck@hotmail.com), November 01, 1999.

Mr. Hyatt, what are the chances these hackers got the personal information we gave to your website in order to become a member? Some of us, for obvious reasons would like to remain anonymous.

I am very concerned.

Thank you for your time.

-- Not Pleased (With@The.Hack), November 01, 1999.

With regard to Mr. Canuck's remark about there being no mention of the hacking incident at the Debunking Y2K site, I entreat readers to recall the case of the Silver Blaze. In that case, Mr. Holmes was investigating the theft of an expensive racehorse and uncovered "the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime." The Scotland Yard officer in charge of the case, Inspector Gregory said, "The dog did nothing in the night-time." To which the esteemed Holmes replied, "That was the curious incident." The watch dog failed to bark when the horse was stolen because he knew the thief.

A very good night to you all.

Of course they advocate censorship -- what else can you possibly call invading *this* forum with the intention of burying discussions here in an escalating negative signal to noise ratio?

-- Ron Schwarz (rs@clubvb.com.delete.this), November 01, 1999.

Michael: On Friday, this forum experienced an "attack of the polly trolls" such as we have never before seen. Many threads attempting to discuss important Y2K topics such as the recent IRS admission were subjected to disruptive comments by those clowns. Out of curiosity, has your forum seen an increase of this type of activity?

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.com), November 01, 1999.

Michael, one of those noxious intruders King mentions also mentioned Michael Hyatt's site. Might look into that person as a "possible." I am praying right now for the protection of your most-valuable prep site. Whoever is doing this is perhaps going to cost others their lives, if they cannot get necessary information. I wonder if that even bothers their consciences?

-- Elaine Seavey (Gods1sheep@aol.com), November 01, 1999.

Morning all, I'm Administrator of the Michael Hyatt Discussion Forum and I would first like to say thanks to all the terrific people over here who have offered words of encouragement! We are in touch with our tech support who is assessing the situation right now.

I'd like to say this incident has only caused the moderating team and most of our members to renew their resolve to continue the wonderful exchange of information and experiences on our forum! Many of our members and most all our staff worked the whole day yesterday to download whatever we could get from threads still intact and from our newly established archives, to save as much vital info as we could.

But even if we hadn't, no one could have "deleted", the things we've all gained from Michael Hyatt's site!

Yes, King of Spain, we also had an invasion of pollys in the last few days, many newly registered ones too!

-- Dorrit (tbungard@iomet.com), November 01, 1999.

(Elaine, do you remember the thread name or URL where that reference is mentioned?)

Thanks for the update Dorrit.

Good luck!

Diane

Hi, Diane. I misread and answered Dorrit on her thread above. At the risk of upsetting the mental ward that bombarded us here on Friday, I will refer you to the two threads, on one of which it was mentioned. I just tried to find them on Genl. Awareness and Misc. and didn't see them. The first was the one entitled, "Slammer...etc." And when I objected to this totally-Y2K-unrelated sacrilegious portrayal, I then got a bunch of really disgusting replies from those "slamming" this forum Friday. I then wrote the thread "Moderators/Syssops, please delete Slammer..." and this brought them out of their holes even more. It was on one of those two threads, and right near one another that day. Hope you can find it.

Will Hyatt show any integrity? We're Baaaaaaaack!

November 4, 1999

Dear Friends:

As you may know, our Discussion Group went down last weekend. We still aren't quite sure what happened. Initially, we thought we had been hacked. Now we're not quite so sure. It may have simply been a hardware failure. The truth is that we'll probably never know.

Reading the above comments, I'd have to say that an apology would be in order. At least, an admission from Hyatt that it was not a hacker....just a computer problem.

I bet this post is met with absolute silence from the y2kooks.

(better yet, it will get deleted, along with this thread!)

-- Wanna (admit@this.publically.now?), November 08, 1999.

From: Y2K, ` la Carte by Dancr (pic), near Monterey, California

Who would he be apologizing to, and for what? To the specific people that he didn't acuse of hacking for thinking that his board might have been hacked? What if you went home and found all your stuff out of order? When you opened the door you say, "Woah! I think I've been robbed!" Later, you found out that it looks more like a dog chased a squirrel in through your cat door and the three of them went to town. So you say, "Hmmm, maybe I didn't get robbed." What would you think of the guy in a stocking cap who strolls by and says, "Don't you owe somebody an apology?"
