Runny Eyes

How do you keep a poodle's runny eyes from staining their face? Is there a certain solution you can apply with a cotton ball?

Also, what do you brush their teeth with? Do you use regular toothpaste? Do you use a child's toothbrush?

I'm getting ready to purchase an apricot mini (she's about two weeks old now) and I'm told that these areas are major concerns for poodles (eyes & teeth).

Do you HAVE to groom them? I'm not talking about brushing, of course I'll do that, I mean all those fancy cuts. Can't you just leave them fluffy? Or does the hair get so long that it gets out of control?

Also, she is the runt of the litter - is that okay? I have no intention of breeding her, but I want her to be healthy and happy.

Thanks for your help!

Never use human toothpaste..the flouride is not good for the dogs...you can purchase a beef flavor toothpaste and special toothbrush from most pet stores..also, they should carry a special wash that you put on their fur between the eyes to help with the staining...poodles are notorious for their runny eyes!!...You can groom your pet in any fashion you see fit, however, you do need to keep special care to keep the coat out of their eyes and hair out of the ears...this can cause alot of problems for your pet...

Regarding grooming: I have a very fluffy white toy poodle. I never groom her in the "traditional" manner. I have always had the top of her head cut really short (I can't stand the tennis ball look), keep the ears very short and fluffy, and have the same length cut all over her body. I get her groomed about every six weeks or so, the first week, she looks funny, but after that, looks great. Some groomers will also do the "teddy bear" cut...it's cute as well. Keep the pup brushed though, you don't want matting. As far as they eyes...good luck...it drives me crazy!
