Minolta Scan Speed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

This scanner is really starting to annoy me. I have only had it for less than two months and it has turned-out to be a pain in the butte! I dumped my Nikon LS-20 internal because it wasn't sharp but DID produce nice color and contrast.

Now I have the Scan Speed and it is EXTREMELY sharp, but with ZERO autoexposure controls and every scan has a strong magenta tint in the shadows. The Nikon allowed me to calibrate gamma settings, but the Minolta will not, and that was confirmed by (the weak) Minolta tech support.

I guess I have to grin and bear it and make the corrections myself...

I'm new to this game, so my comments come without a full understanding of the problems. I just purchased a Scan Speed myself and some of the results are pretty lack-luster. The rainbow effect inside black region is gross and I haven't quite figured out how to get the callibrations right.

One thing I did do, which has made a great improvement was to ditch the Minolta Software in favor of VueScan. VueScan isn't the prettiest of software but the controls are far better than that of Minolta's, and it lets you adjust for all sorts of things. You might want to check it out before throwing the Scan Speed out the door. The software is available from http://www.hamrick.com/

Please have a play and let me know if it is worth keeping. Also, I would be interested to know if there is a Photoshop plug-in for the Minolta Scan Speed.

Thanks (a newby to the group) Jim.
