I don't consider this a "for the best only" kind of site, and if the cutoff is put in place, I am seriously consider leaving MARP. That would be a sad day, but I know if it happens, it wouldn't have been my choice. I can't frequent a place that wishes to take players who can't play as good as some others out of the game.

If you seriously want to limit "lame" recordings as you call them, simply rack the score up where the "lame" recordings would get 0 points, and even then, they shouldn't be banned from here.

Chris.....the cutoff is already active (5 pts only), see news page, and it has produced almost no effect at all !!!

This is not a " "for the best only" kind of site"....otherwise you'll be allowed to submit top scores only. Even the old arcade games did not record your score if it was bolow a certain limit.

Pls....reconsider your decision to leave us !!!

Chris Parsley: You still don't get it, do you? This is NOT about "lame" recordings, this is about MARP being down all the time. If you know of a better solution to reduce the load the scripts put on the servers because of the amount of recordings they have to process, then, please, let us know, and I'm sure that Zwaxy will be happy to remove the cutoff again...

Good point, Cicca! Indeed, most machines in an arcade hall only "remember" the top 5 or top 10 scores. And I sure hope that they don't reset the machines every day, because people who get a good score on a machine would like to see that there for a while. MARP is like a big arcade hall. It keeps the top whatever scores for games, but, unlike arcade halls, and very fortunately, those scores are never reset. And, as has been said several times before, nobody is going to be interested in downloading the recording for a score that is in 30th place or so. So what's the big deal in not accepting those in the first place? If you are really proud of one of your scores, but can't get it onto MARP, then just put it elsewhere (your own webpage for example). So far, this has been the only real solution we've seen to reduce the load on the servers, and if it's a choice between this and not being able to get onto MARP at all because it's down all the time...

Why stop at 10, why not 90?

Me scores will continue to stay on my HD until there is an option for an individual to have all there scores *not* listed on the leader board.

OH ya, forgot to mention. I do download inp files that are not inthe top 3 for various reasons. One reason is some of the inp's do not play back with a version of mame I have and two, some people play differently, just because they do not have the top score(s) does not mean they do not know how to play a game.

-- Dave Kaupp (info@kaupp.cx), October 29, 1999.

Dave....I doubt you downloaded those inps during the last week.... :- (((

What you say it's correct....but do you really learned something from a 4 points game !?! If so....send me those inps !!!! :-)

No, I haven't downloaded anything in the past week.

I often start playing and start getting into a routine for passing many levels. When I'm successful at passing levels I rarely stray from the set rules or patterns for completing a level.

Knowing that I do this, I've often sat in arcades and watched other people play games, good and not so good players.

Some of the help or different ways of getting through levels for me has often come from watching someone who has very little experience with a particular game.

Watching someone who is good only shows me *one* way to get through a game, not how I would be able to get through a game.

My 9 year old daughter has inadvertently given me tips on games as I've watched her struggle through some levels. Now, I don't go around calling her lame because her scores are less then 1% of my scores. She is very proud of her *LAME* scores and I'm proud of her for being proud.

As it stands, I am no longer credited for scores on Bank Panic, Galaga anything, Bombjack, Major Havoc (score was without level skipping) and several others. I am not happy with this, as a lot of effort was put into these games, and I had already deleted (last month) all of my other games that were below the 5 point margin, leaving the ones I thought were viable recordings. If the cutoff is raised to 10%, I will leave this site, and you can have one less top 10er to worry about, UNLESS ZWAXY POSTS THAT THIS IS A REQUIRED CUT FOR SCRIPT USAGE--something that he has not said one way or another in ANY of his posts.

Chris P., I'll be sorry to see you go, but I certainly support the principles of what you are saying.

Sincerely, Q.T.Quazar

Well I haven't been around much recently but I liked Dave Kaupp's suggestion for dealing with some of the lame scores the best - wipe the floor with them. So I've done just that and I'm afraid you'd better add Soukoban Deluxe to your list of games that you're not longer credited for QT....... but then again, it could also be because a 30k score isn't worth that much % wise compared to a 13million score.... ;-)

I'm not going on about elitism here, it's just that it only took 4 nights of playing to learn enough stages of this game to get 13 million so I suspect your 30k score was nowhere near the best you could achieve on this game so why even bother uploading it?

The only reason I'm uploading now, before I have completed the game, is because I've hit the wall on World 4-J currently. If anyone has worked this stage out feel free to email me an inp of this stage being completed..... thanks.

I'm sorry to see that you seem to have a personal dislike for me, BeeJay. I certainly never meant to target you with the charge of elitism--that was in response to the sentiment of the posts way back whenever(if I recall correctly, feel free to prove me wrong)

My rationale behind the "lame" score of 30K on SoukoBan, which I am so delighted you singled out, was because I WAS THE FIRST DAMN PERSON TO POST. I posted that recording, and the Bakatonosama one so that Chris Parsley could evaluate them and tell me what the hell the action keys were for the game; I can play Mahjongg, but I can't read Japanese. I suppose you didn't have that problem however, since you can either read Japanese or watched someone's recording, who watched someone else's, who watched....you get the idea...back to mine. Or maybe they didn't. Maybe they can read Japanese.

Either way, next time you're going to be snarky, at least be subtle about it.

Awwww S#$t...my apologies BeeJay. I was half asleep and grouchy when I made that last post...(though that's no excuse) I had a totally different game in mind.

You were right, I'm guilty of points leeching on that last one. I'll up my score or erase it right away. :(

Sincerely, Q.T.Quazar

QT - I don't have a personal dislike for anyone at Mame and I was picking on an obvious example of a "lame" recording given someone with the skills you obviously possess.

I have no objection to people uploading recordings that are there PB so long as they've spent a reasonable amount of time working on the recording - I mean some of my old scores look crap now compared to some of the newer players and I just wish Zwaxy would give us some way of bulk deleting our scores that don't earn a reasonable amount of percentage points (hint hint) as I would gladly get rid of my now poor games to reduce the loading on the MARP pages.

Or maybe I am just an elitist bastard after all - who happens to hate watching lame recordings........ ;-p

Seriously though I'm pleased you realised which game I was referring to and if you can solve World 4-J please send me an inp of just this level being completed as it's driving me nuts currently..... but then not as bad as World 5 of which I've only looked at A and B so far and they really do look impossible for now........ :-(
