I bought a PUR water filter system at K-mart today.I have never heard of PUR but it says it eliminates Giardia. My daughter got very sick with it a few years ago so when I saw that on the box I bought it. No others said anything about microbiological cysts [giardia] Has anyone any knowledge of this brand? Is it any good? Can you run say...pool water through it?rain? thank you all so much for all your help in preps.

Tress, I know that the PUR is a pretty popular filter among the backpacking set. I have a comparative rating table coming from REI; they mailed it a day or two ago. I'm looking for a filter from the lady who wrote from Venezuela a couple of weeks ago, with whom I have been corresponding regularly.

The important thing is to know what the PUR will filter out. Most filters will filter out Giardia, as it is a Paramecium, and quite large. It's a lot harder to filter out bacteria, which are quite small, and virtually impossible to filter out viruses, which are "submicroscopic".

If I had to filter my water supply, I'd buy a filter which was easy to use, cheap, and had long lived filters. Then I'd plan on also chlorinating the water to kill bacteria and viruses.

I've used a PUR Scout backpacking for several years now with no sickness--even drinking from very questionable water in Mexico. They are a reputable brand, and, if memory serves, even kill viruses as well with the iodine inside. Just don't filter muddy water unless you really have to, as it clogs the filter up rather quickly (it can be cleaned).

For. several gallons a day, or long term use, you'd want a drip type filter to save the work of pumping.

Hope it helps,

Tress:

I have been using a Pur voyageur. Pur comes in different levels [and different prices] Some just take out the big things, some also take out bacteria, and some claim to take out virus particles. Mine also has an iodinated ion-exchanger and charcoal. It seems to work. But then I will probably never recover from the 30 y of drinking glacier fresh water before we knew it was contaminated.
