Anyone see the PBS y2k program today?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

This PBS y2k program reassured the public that there is no problem with electricity (generation and distribution doesn't use dates,) and their business systems will work, no problem with phone systems, no problem with oil and gas, no problem with tanker ships, no problem with banks, no problem with anything. Maybe a few glitches here and there but there are always glitches with computers and they still work. Just round up your financial records. And anyone who stores anything is a religious survivalist fanatic with guns. And if you cash in your stock and take your money out of the bank it is all over, there will be a total breakdown (and you caused it.)

Kostinan was on, his usual "don't worry, be happy." A person who has not been researching this problem would see this program and wonder why anyone would be concerned and they would do nothing to prepare for any disruption because, according to this program, nothing will be disrupted that will cause any hardship.

This program was garbage.

Sincerely,

A religious survivalist fanatic (I have some food, water, heat source, medicine.)

Answers

marcella,

i watched about 20 minutes before removing myself to become violently ill from the garbage they were spoon feeding the american public. the only good thing that can be said about the whole affair is that it was on pbs and not many americans watch pbs... particularly at prime time.

hard to believe but they are going down to the wire on this one... it is singularly amazing that they will allow the people to walk into the lion's den totally unarmed, well... not totally.

preparing for 3 days is kinda like carrying a pocket knife.

I watched the entire show last night and could not believe how the show's host kept drawing major conclusions based on one person's statement or one piece of data. For example, he concluded that "planes won't fall out of the sky" based on one statement from Boeing and a test flight where they rolled the clock ahead (I believe on the autopilot system) during a Boeing test flight. Does this cover all types and brands of aircraft and all systems onboard the average passenger jet? NO WAY !!

These faulty conclusions were made throughout the entire program, on many different subjects and issues. I hope the average person can see through this faulty logic.

As Marianne said, we are going down to the wire on this. That's the important message to those of us who are concerned about it. Dr.Paula Gordon has done an extensive White Paper on this matter and is concerned that the official Clinton plan is to maintain the status quo as long as possible and then fix-on-failure. We must accept this. The PBS show was another official statement from Koskinen and produced, edited, and acted by Chevy Chase, or whoever that guy was that led us thru his Wally World of Y2k. There comes a time when options have run out, so argue as we might, and fret as we might, the die is cast. Act accordingly. And, Marianne, I loved your pocket knife metaphor!

Oh, and PS,

I think it was Lane Core that originally started using the term disconnect to denote the information stream within the Y2k news arena. So Lane, how did you like the title to that PBS show? The Winter of Our Disconnect. Perfect, huh?

I like the new meaning for the initials PBS.

Propaganda Broadcasting System

Fits PBS more and more.
