Nubanasit Creek, Autumn - CROP??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

The argument here is whether or not to crop the original to this size, or whether to print both? An uncropped version can be found HERE

Lens: 210mm Schneider Apo-Symmar
Film: 5x7 Kodak Ektachrome EPP100-6105
Camera: Deardorff 8x10 w5x7 reducing back
Exposure: f/16 @ 1/8 sec
Filters: 2-stop Graduated Neutral Density Soft-Edge

To make this web image, the original transparency was placed on a lightbox and photographed with a digital Nikon E950, then cropped, resized and compressed in Photoshop. The color balance is a bit off, and was not corrected (IAW the rules of this site).

First, the image does not show up.

Secondly, it's not nearly as good as "Contoocook River" on your website.

Third, it is NOT "against the rules" to do color correction to get your digital picture to match the original tranny. That's utterly ridiculous. If the color balance is off, then open it in Photoshop and use the curves pallette and fix it. Do you fix color balance in the darkroom? Of course you do. This is no different. In fact, "shame on you" for NOT color correcting.

I agree with the decision to crop; the sky at the top of the original frame is distracting. I think you did not crop enough. Try cropping the bottom until you reach the orange reflection in the center. It gives the picture a nicer overall proportion and removes an area with relatively little color.
