This might be a dumb question to some but will any old ball head fit the Slik 300dx tripod which came with a pan head? Any recommendations if so? Thanks!

Nick, The 300DX will take any standard head. The supplied pan head is removable (mounts below the pivot), leaves you with a 1/4-20 bolt sticking up. Most heads require a 3/8 thread, so you'll need an adapter from 1/4 to 3/8.
