What's wrong with this picture?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : I-695 Thirty Dollar License Tab Initiative : One Thread

When I see someone like Tim Eyman who lives in a $500,000 on a golf course in Mukliteo who puts forth a bill to "help the little guy" I have to ask myself whats wrong with this picture. I saw him speak in Spokane and my impression was that he was full of "sound byte" factoids with no substance. Whats next? Why not propose referendum to eliminate school taxes on those of us who do not have children in school. Afterall, in the words of Tim Eyman that would certainly be winnable. I'll answer that question. School taxes are there for the common good. I'll be voting against I 695. I'm not impressed with Mr. Eyman or his initiative.

Let me guess:

You drive a 1975 Pinto when your ol' pick'um up truck is broke down.

I am far from rich, but I like nice cars. If I choose to spend my hard-earned cash on a nice car, it's my right to do so. That means that I have chosen to do without something else that I might want, to allow me to purchase a nice, new car. To pay sales tax on said nice, new car is completely acceptable to me - it's a one-time shot, that puts a large amount (I'll translate for you here - "A GOB") of my money into the State coffers.

To pay "excise tax", year after year, on an inflated value that the State has decided that my car is worth, is NOT acceptable to me.

Wake up and listen to a 60% majority of REGULAR FOLKS that are SICK of BEING RAPED by the elected officials that are supposed to be representing them.

And then I think of the guy in the White House proclaiming, "It's for the children"

Then I remember a certain White House intern who just happened to BE one of 'the children' and I scratch my head and wonder,, "WHAT'S for the children"?

When I look at the two smiling policeman in the no on I-695 mailer, I ask what's wrong with this picture? Well, you can't trust even the pictures the opposition uses. The cops are from Salem, Mass. The patch on the left shoulder of the black cop tells is all. Go to:

http://www.salemweb.com/city.htm

You can view the entire patch with the witch. The opposition provides the "trick" and I-695 provides the "treat" this year.

FEAR and TERROR is all the opposition has left! They have squandared their credibility. They have spent $2 million to defeat I-695. The only good part of it is that a lot of that money has come from out of state and it helps simulate our economy. An it is money the opposition can't use to buy legislators in January.

The good news is that tax relief is coming. Those of us in eastern Washington know the value of rain. It makes our crops grow. I-695 is going to cause the release of some of those "rainy day" funds and our economy will grow. You will have more money to spend on your children and family.

Thanks to everyone who has worked so very hard. This includes all of those who have "occupied" the opposition on this site. There are many of you. In particular "Weston" has done an excellent job. I asked him (and some others) to be part of the I-695 speakers bureau but he (and others) work for a government agency and could not go public for fear of their job.

I supervised, trained, and provided information to 50 speakers across the state who defended I-695 against MANY paid political lobbiests. All of the speakers have had a good time. The meek and humble have confronted the professionals and have won! In the process we have worn out several opposition speakers who must drive from town to town. We have been able to have local speakers in most cases. In a few cases we have a couple of retired folks that are willing to travel anywhere to help I-695. My thanks goes to all.

Let's not be too overconfident. If the voter turn out is low, I-695 could fail. If voter turn out is high, I-695 will win. So get out the vote!

Look at Tim's letter on the home page of this site. Come to Bellevue and celebrate the I-695 victory with us.

Sincerely, RD (Monte) Benham, CoChairman I-695

I wonder if these cops are aware that their pictures are being used to perpetrate a fraud.

Do you think they even know their pictures are being used? Have they signed a release? Are they being paid?

I think I'll do a little checking on this. Maybe e-mail the chief of police and mayor to ask them why they are allowing their cops pictures to be used by an anti-taxpayer group that is using their pictures in a fraudulent disinformation campaign.

Maybe some friendy e-mails addressed to those particular cops by some pro-taxpayer cops here asking them why they are participating in this fraud.

Could be interesting and fun.

No, actually I drive a 1972 Toyota Land Cruiser (rusty but trusty) when my 1994 Mercedes Benz is in the shop. HOwever, last year I voted for Referendum 49 which calls for the issuing of bonds to pay for statewide road work. I 695 would remove two thirds of the funding for that program. The very same people calling for R-49 last year are now calling for I 695. Does any of this make sense? No, and if it passes 695 could show once and for all that governing by intiative has put the state into a one step forward two steps back cycle.

J.

What's wrong with this picture. A guy with a '94 Mercedes Benz complaining about a guy with a $500,000 house.

It's called sour grapes, apparently Mr. Eyman can manage his money better than you and isn't buying cars that are always in the shop.

P.S. I'd love to have a Ref on cutting school taxes to those who don't have and have never had children.

Ed - never made more than $40,000 a year but also never complained about what the next guy makes. unless its the Gov. who apparently can't govern

sorry for the re-post of your reply

Ed - nobody is purfect, except mee

Drive a mercedes huh? You got tagged pretty good. So what if Tim owns a house worth $500k. It's his money isn't it? And like any reasonable person, he want's to keep as much of it as possible. I hope he get's a bigger house. In fact, I hope he buys your house out from under you. And the car.

-- William Sheehan (wsheehan@billsheehan.com), October 25, 1999.

He wont be buying either my house or my car. You see I own them both free and clear and neither is for sale. If he wants to buy my 1972 Toyota Land Cruiser I might consider that. Course the license tag price would go UP from $25 to $30. Perhaps in a 20 years or so he can use all the money he's saving on license tags to buy the "cruiser." Would you like to make an offer Bill Sheehan?

is it stock or does it have the chevy engine conversion. just fmi. toy should bring back that boby style.

p.s. sorry about the mercs

Ed - bought my '82GT today

Mr. Eyman is trying to influence people by saying that they will save money and in turn they will put it back into the state by increased spending.... (As from http://lifetel.com/tabs/factfiction.htm) "Politicians Claim.......I-695 guts last year's Referendum 49" "Mr. Eyman's Claim.....R-49 provided an embarrassingly small tax cut of $30 per car. Voters were insulted by such a pitiful tax cut but it was better than nothing so they voted for it. R-49 addressed the problem of outrageously expensive license tab fees I-695 solves it." Comment:I have owned the same car for 8 going on 9 years now and have, in the last 2 years, purchased 2 more of the same make/model/year car, I have paid the same $52.00 per year ever since I first bought it. So I ask.....WHERE WAS THIS $30 CUT????? If that were the case I should only be paying $22.0 per year per car. "Politicians Claim.......I-695 only benefits the rich" "Rm. Eyman's Claim.....Get real, the rich are choosing between license tab fees and another round of golf, while working class folks are choosing between license tab fees and car insurance or health insurance or other essentials. Bill Gates wasn't getting signatures for I-695 at Costco it was our senior citizens, working families, and struggling college kids that got 514,000 signatures for I-695." Comment:My wife and I are not rich, we do ok and make ends meet. Cutting the tabs will not save us the money that Rm. Eyman is implying, It is just the opposite, we will end up spending more on repairs then we would save, Just last week I had to spend over $400.00 to replace a uppercontrol arm in my car do to the conditions on I-5 from Kent to the Pierce county line,(you know the strech that makes you feel as tho your on a bad train track), the savings just don't add up the extra cost. (tabs and smog test are $64 per car per year, 52+12x3=$182.00 after I-695 I will spend $45 per car per year, 30+15x3+$135.00 with a net savings of $47 per year) That savings is equal to "A" single night out for dinner. Or you can look at in the eyes of the government $4.00 in taxes, that in it's self doesn't fill up a D.O.T.'s gas tank. "Politicians Claim.......I-695 will mean more vehicles" "Mr. Eyman's Claim.....Families that have two vehicles will go out and buy a third one? Of course not. But families will be more willing to upgrade their vehicles, meaning newer vehicles on the roads (which are more fuel efficient, safer, and cause less pollution). Working class folks, not just rich people, should be able to afford a newer vehicle. Comment:Referring to the aforementioned SAVINGS, my wife and I still wouldn't be able to buy a new/newer car. All three of our cars a paid for, with the $47.00 we still couldn't afford the $250 + a month in car payments let alone the increased cost in insurance. In short......Mr.Eyman will save his few hundred a year in tabs wile thoes of us who still can't aford a new car will be strugling to keep what we do have on the road and going to the dentist to fix our fillings
