Long range defensive plans , gear and techniques

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hi,

Y2K isn't very far away. How far away have you established your defensive "line in the sand"? How far away have you planned and practiced defending you and yours? At what distance have you determined your shooting skill level will reliably take out hostile parties? What defensive arms and gear have you determined best -- and what were the determining factors?

Figure it would be helpful to discuss general strategy and tactics for home/retreat defense. What are the differences in gear and tactics at different distances.

I'm "fortified" out to 825 meters...how 'bout you?

At this point in time, I'm not revealing anything about my location, my survival gear, my armory, or my tactical secrets. Never give information out, you don't know who your enemies are. My plans change weekly depending on what kind of mood I'm in.

Killer isn't a "troll". He's posted here before.

How are things on your side of the world Killer? Any news to share?

Personally, I'm working on getting a block plan together. Any insight would be appreciated.

Mike

Killer, have you ever thought of the consequenses after you kill, that the Gov. Martial Law troops bash in your front door to haul you away when they find dead bodies in front of your home??? haul you away they will! They ask no questions! They will not read you your rights, because during martial law, you have no rights!

I will approach calmy, "Hey, you'all want a kitten? I've got four of them, just wait a minute, and I'll bring them out to show you." And I do have kittens.

I will watch the individuals flee.

If that is not successful, I'll simply give one a shy kind of look, and whip out a wedding veil.

It could prove difficult to convince a lynch mob that you needed do shoot someone in self defence at 600+ metres. Order and polietness may demand that the population become openly armed but I don't honestly think the average joe sixpack needs to worry about training and prepping themselves for long distance sniping. A $200- shotgun should be adequate for practical defencefor those who would profit more by spending the savings on more rice and beans. Of course for all those yuppies out there there's still time to order a $5000+ dollar .50BMG rifle that shoots consistant groups at 2000+ metres out of the box. If you can afford it and the $5 rounds it fires, buy it. It will be beyond price next year and the bolt action variety look like a deer rifle with a humorously thick barrel with a muzzle break. CNN recently ran an anti-gun smear about the hassle free accesabilty to this most excelent rifle even there has never been a violent crime committed with it.No special paper work out of the normal is needed and can be ordered through most clearing houses by any major chain. They are after all just large bore rifles. I end with a rant from one of our founding fathers. The best ranters ever. "A militia when properly formed are in fact the people themselves and include all men capable of bearing arms To preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms . . . " Richard Henry Lee, Additional Letters From the Federal Farmer53 (1788 "What, Sir, is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty.... Whenever Governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins."--Rep. Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, spoken during floor debate over the Second Amendment, I Annals of Congress at p. 750,August 17, 1789.

Mike,

Two things. First, think carefully who you hook up with. Make sure they have their head on VERY straight. I would avoid gung ho rambo wanta be's...and those who would panic or lose their heads. Also, communications, "plans", agreement on who does what, ect. is essential of course. Best of luck to you. Think you will have a challenging job. Might want to wait untill after before commiting to see who is "worthy" and who is best to avoid for whatever reason.

Also, would give strong consideration to liability issues. Especially anyone likely to do something making the group liable or guilty/involved in trouble. Whether doing something stupid or getting into unneccesary gun fights. If TPTB restore any lost order, wouldn't want to have to answer for what a "group member" did while the light were out. This is closely tied to checking out potential members carefully.

Basically, I would not commit to any mutual defensive pacts until after I see what Y2K brings...and who is worth having on your team. I would keep "communication plans" open and worked out in advance -- then form defensive pacts after the fact, when the threat is better knows...as would be your choices, and the ability to evaluate potential group members under stress....rather than guess by their talk this side of Y2K. This would also keep your defensive capabilities under wraps...and keep your stash of defensive gear from being "known about" or "spoken for" ...for the "greater group good" just before some "dissapoint" you!!!

Best wishes, Mike.

Mike,

Diane already outed Killer as a troll using several handles to make goofy posts

-- (xyz@abc.com), October 20, 1999.

XYZ,

The moderators on this forumn just may not know as much as they think they do. Just because they know a poster's IP does not mean they know who is posting under that IP.

Three examples. I use a computer that other people use. I log on to the internet thru a network that sits behind a firewall. I also log on from work and home..remotely...using the same access. The moderator doesn't know if it's me, my brother, or my brother's kids that's posting. Even though they imagine they know. The moderator/on-line stalker just may not know as much as she thinks she does...

Second, sometimes, two post may have close, but slightly different IP's. This may or may not be the same person. Even if they are the same IP, that IP may be for one person in say an office one day, and get dynamically assigned to another person in the same office on another day. Might be the same person, might not be.

Third, Some people log on to one ISP, such as AOL, then go thru another such as MSN. Different people from , say the first ISP might appear to have the same IP, since one is "generically" assigned by the second to those logging in thru the first.

Basically, some people use the same "tag line" and some vary it to add "flavor" to their post. Much like a "P.S.". I would say what matters is the content of the post, not the messenger. However, to a moderator with delusions of granduer of how important their little forumn is, they may get some sort of "mental" or "emotional" "benefit" by looking up who they think the poster is. Especially if the get a "dot gov" or "dot mil" IP. I can only guess this makes them feel special, like someone who thinks the CIA, FBI or whomever is "watching them". Guess they feel important if they imagine themselves to be "monitored" or the "victim" of some "agency skulldugery".

IMO, I think it's simply a matter of large numbers of people having access thru where they work, or where a friend or family member works, and who just have a view and interest on Y2K. It does not represent any "official" posting by the .gov or .mil the poster's IP belongs to, anymore than a .aol means AOL is "behind some effort to monitor or disrupt this forumn". Just indididual people posting for their own reasons, without any "orders" from their ISP.

Finally, if some "agent" from the "powers that be" logged onto here, for whatever reason, in an "official" capacity, they would no doubt leave traces and use IP's that would tell the moderators or other snoops exactly what they wanted them to know, and lead them to think what they wanted them to think. TPTB are not bungling clowns that don't understand what tracks they leave in cyberspace or on this little forumn's server logs -- if they were even to bother coming here at all. It's just a case of "delusions of granduer" I think. After all, everybody wants to feel what they do is important. Especially people who volunteer a lot of time and effort "moderating" a forumn with two sides flaming each other all the time. Suspect "victimology" comes into play with the "delusions of granduer" as well. And lots of "wishful thinking" by those wanting attention.

Anyone know where to get old McGyver tapes?

-- PM (PaulDMaher@worldnet.att.com), October 20, 1999.

Yes, wonderful idea!! I've thought several times how wonderful it would be to have all that "McGyver" knowledge in my head!

As for home defense, I foresee possibly defending my home against one or two individuals at a time who, I believe from what I've read about the post-Hurricane Andrew situation, will quickly move on to an easier target if met with any resistance. In my rural area, I can't quite imagine my property invaded by a large group of bad-to-the-bone a**holes -- unless, of course, it involves a prison break-out. But there's plenty of miles between me and the prison and I'm not going to worry about that scenario.

Also, I have 5 dogs which, at the very least, takes care of my early warning system (no pulling watch!).

Of course, if the bad-to-the-bone group is the military/police, I don't know if I'd even attempt to defend myself.

-- dakota (none@thistime.com), October 20, 1999.

Never mind long distances, many of us are just getting competent at short ranges! My question is, for defending yourself with a rifle at less than, say, 200 yards, should I get hollow point or FMJ ? Normally you would use hp for killing animals...however I've heard that heavy winter clothing can slow hp down a lot so you really should use FMJ which would penetrate better.

-- biker (y2kbiker@hotmail.com), October 20, 1999.

The loss of speed from clothing is only relavant with handguns.High powerewd rilfes are throwing rounds 3000+ feet per second.thin skinned animals like people are much easier to kill then large game.

-- zoobie (zoobiezoob@yahoo.com), October 20, 1999.

Anyody know where I can get my hands on a McMillan M-88 sniper rifle? I love to target shoot anyway (consistent (9 out of 10 or better) hits on a 1" target at 120 yds. with .177 pellet, 1" target with .22 pistol at 150 yds., 2" target with 30/06 at 400 yds., none of these scoped. With scopes, I rule the range...) but a .50 with TWO THOUSAND yards' range would OWN on the range, muahahaha...

(As a side note, Navy Seals apparently love that particular rifle as well. I heard tell it's their standard issue for Seal sniper teams. One seriously big-a$$ gun though, seven feet or so long!)

Of course, I'm more interested in the "ooh and ahh" factor than using it as a long-range perimeter defense tool for post-Y2K, but it'd be nice to have if the need arose...
