Camcorders for digital stills

I have seen indications in specs for some camcorders that they are capable of taking digital still pictures? Does this mean they might be alternatives to the usual digital camera?

I have JVC's GR-AXM7OOU camera and have enjoyed taking many digital pictures with it. Although it has the low resolution of 320x240 it produces suprising good results. My brother bought a JVC with a still shot mode and it wasn't a true digital capture camera. The video simply froze the image for a brief period. The results were too poor to be tolerable.

I used my JVC GR-AX5 to do video stills with a few years back several times. I had a video card on my PC that allowed another source input through 2 RCA plugs and I used a program called vidcap (Microsoft) and Videdit (also Microsoft) to capture the video sequence and then edit each frame one at a time. I would grab the fram I wanted, put it into photostyler or Corel and edit it as I wanted. The only drawback at that time (5 years ago) was no way to get it back on tape! Hope this helps! John
