Must-see movie for all photographers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo: Creativity, Etc. : One Thread

I just saw a movie called "Pecker" (not what you think!!) about a teenaged photographer who lives with his "culturally challenged" family in Baltimore. It's a tongue in cheek look at street photography and the New York art market. It's amusing and insightful. Some great quotes: "I love you more than Kodak", "Stop taking my picture- you're ruining my life"; something about opening your eyes to see the art in laundry stains....

Also of interest is the fact that Pecker's camera is a low-budget rangefinder (looks like a Canonet) supporting the fact that successful photographers don't necessarily need high-end equipment.

This movie should be required seeing for all photographers.

OK Asher, you've piqued my interest. Is this in theaters or can I rent the video

"Pecker" is a John Waters movie. Perhaps you've enjoyed some of his earlier works. Anything he did with Devine should be required viewing by anyone who feels that Kakfa is just too bland. "Pecker" is available on video now.

Also by John Waters: Hair Spray! It features Rikki Lake before the talk show. It is a hoot!

Sorry Mason- I should have clarified that it is only available on video. It was at both major video chains near me so I think it's been widely distributed.

where have you been Ash? cute movie not great, especially the photos, but cute(Waters is now mainstream). The real Ohio can be found in a movie called "Gummo"! If "Pecker" is a must see for you "Gummo" will singe your brain. should be for rent in most places...

Thank for the tip, Trib. I'll check it out.

Where have I been? Pursuing a stressful, all-consuming, non- photographic (unfortunately) career. Just finished 11 years of training- ouch! My wife gave up on any hope of my regaining my sanity about 3 years ago.

I hope this movie is therapeutic.
