Drudge's big story is the world markets are in a 2% drop right now. Any predictions about NYSE tomorrow? I'm betting it will be a black Monday - a blood bath, it's all down hill from here! www.drudgereport.com/

Then endless speculation as to why ...

Not yet. Too many think it will be tomorrow. It may be, but I think the plunge protection teams will be doing everything to stop it, but it will happen sooner rather than later.

I like the story on that page about the CHINESE developing ways to atttack US aircraft carriers in case they come to Taiwan's aid.

I think the Japanese had a plan for that 55 years ago--they were called kamikazes.

All you need to take out a carrier(which is so big you can hardly miss) is to have 50 hostile aircraft each launch a EXOCET missile at the same time from all azimuths, then throw in some diversionary strafing, or just run interference against the screening vessels, and you're bound to hit something.

Throw in a few prowling enemy subs to distract some of the screen, and it would be a logistical nightmare to defend. I clearly remember from reading stories about one WWII sea battle, where the Jap carrier was trying to launch its aircraft,(which must be into the wind), only to be thwarted by a US sub slinging torpedoes at it. Nowadays, there are steam catapults, so wind direction is not important as much.

Profit,

Do you think we'd launch a full scale attack against mainland China if they attacked our carriers?

LIBERTY: I can't answer that, but here is some history to ponder.

I just read today on this board some statement by the Chinese that their TWO nuclear power stations were Y2K ready.

Be that as it may, the USA has about 100 nuclear power stations, some of which have up to 5 reactors. A little-known fact is that in the cold war with Russia (then the USSR), each country had targeted, for maximum collateral damage and hence deterrent effect, for a good percentage of their ICBM's to hit the nuclear power stations!

The radioactive fallout from this would be absolutely catastrophic! So, if it's true that CHINA has only TWO, and the USA has 100, then guess who has the terrorist advantage??

There was an entire article in Scientific American about this about 1983.

Which country would be COVERED in nuclear dust, with the winds carrying things everywhere? Don't think for a second that the Chinese would have any compunctions about doing this.

If China "toasted" the USA it would also "toast" its own economy. The global economy has forced nations to curb in their claws a bit, and to a limited extent each must wish the other success. It doesn't mean they can't emotionally hate each other but the head reigns and everyones scramble out of recessions and inflationary cycles is too interconnected for amputations.

Greece and Russia down nearly 6%!

And this from Marketwatch.com:

"It's a combination of an extremely weak Wall Street (Friday) and jittery Asian markets. There's also press speculation about whether there's a correction or a crash (underway)," said Martin Evans, London-based head of equity research at the stockbrokers Sutherlands Ltd."

@, greece and russia are normally volatile. Very wild markets.

As to the open, any good news will pop it up for now, so look to the msrket WANTING an upside open (so says the S&P right now) but 30 minutes into it we will see whats what.

We watch in slack-jawed stupefaction as we Hollow Men, deracinated ciphers all, get washed away by the tide of History. In our selfishness, we thought we were special, and untouchable, but the tide is strong, and inexorable. Those who manipulate events understand that they unleash a frightening power when their machinations cause markets to tumble. The vast sea of technoslaves our Managed Economy has created will find themselves out-stripped by events, with no taproots of family, community and culture to fall back on. Let us hope that we, and they, can respond in love to an external world that appears to have spun out of control. (On the other hand, Spidey, a 2-3% drop haint so much).

-- Spidey (in@jam.riptide), October 18, 1999.

Spidey's sententious blather is typical doomer claptrap. These so-called prophets read far too many comic books when they were kids. You all think you're some kind of Jimmy Olsen, uncovering Dr. Doom's plan and waiting for Superman to show up.

-- ArriveAlive (Poddlesworth@Old.com), October 18, 1999.

So, if the economy keeps the imperial tigers claws sheathed, what happens in a severe recession or depression? Does the tiger turn tail, or start to sharpen said claws with a gleam in his eye?

Arrive Alive---

LOL_LOL_LOL_!!!!!!!!!

spideys post transcends!

And you compare to comic book reading!!

Wow--if I suspected there was a huge variance of wisdom on this forum before--your comments just confirmed it.

A good affirmation for you at this time might be--

"be still and know that I am God"

Spidey, as usual you are awesome. Thanks. You really should post more :-) And we slaves certainly are adrift to an extent never seen before. LockDown will take away the mobility. ClampDown will aggravate a seething restlessness ...

-- Ashton & Leska in Cascadia (allaha@earthlink.net), October 18, 1999.

Arrive -

Do some homework, fellah. Doc Doom is literally in a different universe than Jimmy and Supes. Cool idea for a storyline, though.

Frankly, Spidey's posting was both too measured and too poetic (for extra credit, find the reference to T.S. Eliot) to pass muster in the comic book world. Nowhere near enough exclamation points and a complete absence of phrases like "world-shattering", "pulse-pounding", and "galaxy-spanning".

Also no great-looking women in glittery and oddly-tailored costumes. 8-}]
