Are digital cameras platform-specific?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have a Mac. Is there special software, adaptor, etc. necessary to run a camera to my Mac?

Thank you

I think that a lot of digital camera manufacturers are not stupid, and that they do provide software for both platforms on the cd. However, hardware is another thing. As in another similar message a few posts back, you may want to consider a Card Reader. Even if your MAC does not have a serial port, you will want a Reader because the serial connection is so slow.

look into a USB Card reader or a Parallel port reader if your Mac does not have the USB

What kind of Mac do you have? It might make a difference if you have an older one, but the new Macs have no problems with digital cameras. A card reader is nice, but not necessary if you are willing to wait for the images to download. The download time will vary with the camera and the amount of data it will hold.

If you need more help send me an e-mail directly. I used to be a digital camera specialist in Apple's tech support center.
