Eligibility for Kansas State Champs -- what should the criteria be?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

OK will host the Kansas State Orienteering Champs on December 4. The tentative plans are for Raymond to set the courses (short courses) on a brand new map of the Woodridge area of Clinton Lake.

What should the criteria be for Kansas-champ eligibility?

That is an important and interesting question. I think it is also something that should be established beforehand, but without all the whining and politics that accompanies something like the US WOC team trials selection. Since you asked the question, just what do you think, Spike?

I think that the state chumps would be well-served to have a fairly wide open field. I would be in favor of a scheme like one of the following over one that is more restrictive on who is eligible:

  1. A championship open to everyone is a possibility. That would not be complicated to implement. You don't see this in many sports, but it is done sometimes.
  2. We could declare eligible people who meet one of the following criteria. (These are actually based on an ideas I got from another OKer):
    • Be a member of a Kansas-based club (that means OK or PTOC presumably).
    • Be a Kansas resident.

Perhaps there are some criteria that should disqualify people from chumpionship eligibility? Any MU fans out there want to comment?

I like Mook's second suggestion. I think the criteria should be broad enough that it is not a problem to be eligible. To define "Kansas resident" how about something like -- has lived in Kansas for at least three continuous months at some point in the last 25 years.

Just for the record, I live in Missouri (but am NOT a MU fan). I have lived in Kansas quite a bit. I am making the map and will probably help set out markers and test the courses. So, I will not compete at the Kansas Champs.

I suppose what really matters is what Lemon Moraine thinks.

Is this state championship competition going to be the one in Lawrence on Dec 4? I thought that was going to be a "short event." I don't know what constitutes short or long, but I just want to make sure you're still planning a beginner event that day.

We don't have anyone in our group who's "Orienteer Champion" material and I have no idea if anyone is going to meet the criteria of living in KS for 3 months sometime in the past 25 years (I like that one a

The event on Saturday will be the "Kansas State Orienteering Champms." It is an open event -- everyone is welcome (but only the people who meet the eligibility rule can be declared "State Champions).

There will be a beginner's course.

The event will feature short courses. A Red course normally takes the winner about an hour. For a "short course" it will take the winner about 25-30 minutes.

Perhaps runners who have rely heavily on reindeer blood for nutritional needs could also be considered for eligibility.

It's settled then. Eligibility for the state chumps will require that a person have resided in Kansas for at least 3 consecutive months during some time in his or her life.
