Chimfex Alternative ?

Hello Everyone:

Went to my local woodstove dealer today looking to purchase a few sticks of Chimfex -- an emergency chimney fire suppressant -- and was promptly told the late-great State of California banned this stuff several years ago (probably some nanny bureaucrat trying to protect us feeble, foolish children from ourselves). Anyway, having experienced one nasty chimney fire in my life -- a truly terrifying event btw -- and not wanting to battle a possible future one unarmed, can anyone out there offer a good alternative? Either an effective substitute or out-of-state mail-order source would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Yan,

Lehmans carries Chimfex in their store and probably their paper catalog, too. I didn't find it in their on line catalog, but you can order a paper catalog at http://www.lehmans.com.

Another online source is the Illianucky (IL,IN,KY) farm store chain of Rural King. http://www.ruralking.com Direct address for chimfex http://ruralking.com/rko/cart.cgi?PRODUCT=095100012&SPD=quY01450530rjbw

Rural King also sells neat little AM/FM battery/solar/windup radios for about $20. Good for BOB bags and we're giving several as gifts for family in earthquake and hurricane prone areas.

Other neat fireplace stuff at Plow & Hearth. Not cheap, but. . . They also have those reflectors to put around the fire. Haven't finished looking at the rest of it yet.

Shouldn't have pushed that button. P&H have the 10" Dietz, but it's 17.95 compared to 14.95 at gardenerssupply.com. Hope it's still that price, that's what I paid anyway.

I really, really want to order the suncatcher--I know you've seen that famous photo of the mad bluebird. Well, here it is in suncatcher form at 29.95.

Ah, I see they have the Coleman lantern, you know, the one that looks as if it's trying to be a living room lamp. Runs on 4 x D. We have this one and it saves us during and after Floyd. Lasts a long time if you're judicious with it and it's certainly bright enough to read by. Loop to hang it high for more light. 14.95

Hmm--how about a beer-making kit? $31.95, two or more, 29.95 ea.

Mushroom kits, 24.95
