Connection: Nightline Terrorist Series & Y2K

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion of the Nightline Series on the possibility (the show states likelihood) of Bio-terrorism attacks. Doesn't it seem likely that this show was intended as a means of acclimating people to a few key concepts? Such as life is not secure, and we could be thrown into a situation where there is tremendous suffering and loss of life. That government intervention would be the only possible reponse, and would be/should be generally welcomed. That our country could encounter frightening things that would change the way we view life forever. The timing of this show seems intriguing to me. We already know that the government is concerned, and rightly so, that terrorist attacks might be timed to co-incide with Y2K. In my opinion, I think they feel it is more likely than they care to admit, and this show is one way of getting people to view this threat, and other similar threats to our way of life, as a mainstream idea, and not the view of wackos. If you had tried to tell your friends and neighbors a few weeks ago that they should stay home on New Years eve, and not go to any huge public gatherings for fear of being involved in a terrorist attack, they would have looked at you like you had gone off the deep end. Now, if you advised caution and they act like you're crazy, you have merely to point out that Nightline just did a five part series about the near certainty of this sort of thing happening. No, it might not happen right at the century rollover, but that timing has a greater probability than any other. I think the government does know a lot of very scary things, not all of which tie in directly to Y2k, but some may, and I don't think they really can come out with it all and scare every one to death over something unpredictable, and possibly unavoidable. It's easy to say that the population deserves to know this, that, and the other, but if you take a deep breath, and think through all of the ramifications, you begin to see how complicated that concept becomes. There is no easy answer. At least I don't see one.

MeMyself&I,

Strange, but I feel as if I were talking to myself. :)

However, I feel much the way that you do. You must consider that this show wasn't just thrown together. It took time to find all of the news clips and put them together to form this 5 part show.

I have discussed this issue at length with some of my coworkers. We figure that the timing of this show is something to question at the least. Doesn't give any of us that warm and fuzzy feeling. The only main question that I have is WHERE. Where will it occur. I do not think that it will be anthrax, but I do believe that something will occur. WHERE?

Quite frankly, this show scared the crap out of me, and a few others that I know.

Personally, I think there is a greater chance of a chemical plant "accident" or of tampering with the water supply to contaminate it with excess chemicals or something else more suspicious introduced. It is reasonable that it would happen in one of the largest cities as that would do the greatest damage and make the most stir. I would not like to live in or around Washington D.C., L.A or N.Y.C. Those are probably the most likely candidates. I think those of us who are aware of the dangers, wherever we live, should use extra caution at the date rollover. I would not drink public water anytime soon, even if it is functioning, and I would not go to any large public gatherings in confined spaces, especially. It's sad to have to be this paranoid, but I do believe that times are changing, and at least for a few years, not for the better.

MeMyself&I,

I agree about DC, LA, and NYC. However, another part of my brain says that these will not be the places, simply because these places would be the most likely spots. There will be numerous celebrations at the rollover. Think out of the box on this one, how about Vegas, Atlantic City, Chicago, or Atlanta. With concentrated security at the well known spots, the rest of the "big" places will be pretty much open. Just my thoughts, I could be wrong. Anyway, I don't plan on being at any of those places. I'll either have to be at work :( or I'll be at home.

The US Govt. is expecting problems. When they announce something of a threat nature to the public, you can be sure there is something to it.

People who potentially might receive written reports on this or any other relevant subject (anyone potentially in a position of authority in a sensitive area) would hypothetically be receiving details concerning any suspected threat. And those same people would hypothetically be bound to protect the information they would receive.

(Nothing in this post should be construed as a recommendation or a statement of fact in any respect. I state that this is only an observation of general principles. And is not intended, in any way, to be a statement of any secret information or method; whether past, current or future.)

MeMyself&I, All, I agreee that the timing of this series is very ominous.

But I also think that we'll be seeing more of this from the media in order to condition the "sheeple" to accept martial law, or at least in increased fedgov.org involvement, maybe thru FEMA or national guard presence.

I also believe that while the gov't will claim that these are terrorist events, it's very possible that they might "orchestrate" these activities themselves.

i watched three of the segments . what realy caught my attention was last segment ,one of the panelists stated at the end of the program,if we have an incident(large)we can expect a reduction in our freedoms, tighter controls by our governmentand a total change in the way we are allowed to live our lives.

-- hill (hill @gulfcoast.net), October 09, 1999.

Bill,

I wonder if this could have anything to do with the Joint Forces?

As to the other thought about a "planned" action, I don't discount it, but don't really want to consider it. Hopefully the government would not resort to something that low. If it was ever found out (ie WACO) all would not be well for TPTB.

no talking please,

Just who are you? And, why the need to put a disclaimer on your post?

cannot-say;

I disagree with your assesmant that fedgov.org would not "stoop so low". IMHO they are capable of anything!

Check out; www.sightings.com/political/weapons/annauls.htm AND; /weapons/saddamsbiol.htm AND /weapons/newagentiraq.htm AND /weapons/formerchief.htm ALSO; www.garynorth.com/y2k/detail_.cfm/4130 AND cfm/4153 AND cfm/4602 I had also bookmarked another article on an alledged defector from the Iraqi bio-weapons program in which she, ( the defector), alledges that Islamic terrorist cells in the US and other western countries have for some time been in possession of vials of anthrax and other agents. These vials have been smuggled into the US during the 90s for simultaneous release at some future date. The posting has been removed. You might also note that all members of the armed forces have been required to get the anthrax vaccine. Lately there has been much disscussion about the so called, "mystery chemtrails" seen over much of the US, Canada,Australia, and Western Europe. Some have speculated that our own governments are poisoning us because: 1; we're a bunch of "useless eaters" and they want to "cull the heard". or 2; They don't want to have to pay us social security benefits.or 3; They're in a conspiracy with the HMOs, who don't want to have to pay the medical costs of a rapidly ageing boomer population. If you truly believe any of the above, I suggest going into your garage, hooking a garden hose to your auto's tailpipe and..... A more likely theory is that the chemtrails are a mass innoculation program carried out without the knowledge of the population. These chemtrails have often been sighted over sparsely populated areas of Canada and the western US. If they are trying to poison us, why waste it on areas of very little population? Anthrax effects both livestock and wild animals, so spraying areas with few humans but much animal life would make sense. These chemtrails have been linked to outbreaks of respirtory ailment, many have gotten ill, a few have died. This happens with any mass innoculation program. Anthrax attacks the respirtory system, filling the lungs with a whipped cream like fluid which drowns the victim.

I think bioterrorism will be very ugly. And so will New Years. Can you imagine all the moronic, Beavis and Butthead-types who might simply be prank calling the authorities with anthrax scares? How in heaven's name are they going to be able to determine which threats are real and which are legit? My guess is that the authorities will air on the side of caution, take it ALL seriously, and declare martial law with quarantines and/or curfews in the big cities. Anyone roaming around will be shot or apprehended, like an Indian outside of a reservation back in the 1800s. Not a pretty picture.

Long-term, I am beginning to believe that bioterrism attacks or threats will bring this whole statism/libertarian conflict that has been simmering to a head. There are two choices that a government will be forced to do in times of extreme, paranoiac fear and crisis: clamp down or step back and "give up." My guess is that most of Americans will initially support the "clamp down" option, and that this will entail turning our country into a huge Police State. Everybody will be under surveillance at all times, and a HUGE portion of our tax revenues will go towards spying on the general population...not just in "black budget" operations, but totally out in the open, sanctioned, even welcomed, by most of the public. That's how scary it's going to get. We will welcome life in the 21st century electronic zoo.

Some of this might be in effect right now. As an experiment, write an electronic message containing the words: FBI, anthrax, yersinia, broth, kiloton, megaton, nuke, milligram, mg, milliliter, gram, g, millimeter, mm, CIA, NSA, pomyat, don, Marx, Trotsky, White, nazi, Y2K, LSD, methamphetamine, ammonium nitrate, cocaine, freebase, nitrocellulose, pet ether, Russia, China, seccession, Shining Path, Red Hand, Maoist, apocalypse, perimeter, FEMA, Mt. Weather, ammunition, AK-47, Clinton, Bush, dynamite, BATF, Mumia, Serbia, brotherhood, etc.

Some people say that each of these words (or a combination of such) will automatically trigger some kind of national security supercomputer to begin tracking you. If your profile fits that of a dangerous threat, then you get unexpected vans showing up across the street.

Paranoid yet? Ever thought that the Internet might be a wonderful way for a "setup?" That is, you in the shoes of a national security agent can foment a small amount of controversy here and there and see which troublemaker citizens come "sniffing" toward the bait. Then you assume that a fraction of these citizens are genuine fruitloops and you track their activity to preemptively shut down crimes before they happen.

This is all on the way if not already here. It's only going to get stranger, too. Lay low and keep your wits about you.

Anyone in touch with E. Coli? Wonder what his thoughts on this topic are. Invar? I'm interested in your thoughts as well.

-- (cannot-say@this.time), October 09, 1999.

I watched parts of that series, and I thought the timing of it was the most interesting aspect. There are lots of issues about terrorism in the press these days, some of it with a Y2K connection, much of it not, and I can't shake this ominous feeling that the public is being "psychologically prepared" for something. I would imagine that TPTB would keep a low profile about this stuff otherwise.

-- (pshannon@inch.com), October 09, 1999.

I hope you're right Ralph, but I asked an infectious disease specialist if he thought mass innoculation could be the answer, and he did not think so.

-- Mumsie (Shezdremn@aol.com), October 09, 1999.

Personally I've noticed that most people find the concept of biowar just too difficult or scary to think about including a number of "survival" minded folks I know who have made comprehensive preps for Y2K disruptions. They don't even want to hear about it which I understand because frankly I find it scarier than even nukes. I'm not sure if there's really a timing issue here; folks in government have been trying to raise awareness of this problem for some time...I think the media is just finally begining to "get it". Frankly I'm not planning to go anywhere near a large city (S.F. area being the closest) within 2 weeks of either side of New Years.

It is almost inevitable some group will mount a biological attack on U.S. soil....mush more likely than a nuclear one. Anthrax while horrible is actually one of the least effective bioagents they might use. Besides the fact that it is generally considered to take 10-15k anthrax particles to infect a human it's also true that anthrax is not considered infectious (person to person). Smallpox is a much more powerful agent. takes 1 to 3 particles to infect and it is a very infectious and easily transmitted disease. It may well be that any agent used will be a "binary" or mixed weapon (anthrax/smallpox, bot- tox/smallpox, etc.). God help us if this comes to pass.

I to believe this concept is being presented because the possibility of an attack increases with the passage of time and because the year 2000 changeover represents an important (and I believe) "tempting" date to many. Civilian biodefense is possible at the individual level but I doubt many will take these steps. I've gotten good (current issue) NBC facemasks (MCU-2/P) and NBC rated filters, have on order gloves (plus liners), coated tyvek suits, waterproof PVC boots, disinfectants and am researching germicidal lighting (UV @ 215nm) and HEPA filter systems to ventilate and pressurize my home if an event takes place. Not exactly cheap but not too pricey either if you're creative.

Yep, seems inevitable and the timing of this PR stuff seems suspect. Good luck all......

DCK

P.S.-Grainger's has fluorescent germicidal lamps in various wattages and sizes....my use would be to put a couple in the airpassage behind a multilayer filter system (HEPA being the final filter stage) to cook any virus or bacterium that might get past the filters. Still pondering/researching the "ozone" issue (UV lamps tend to create this).

If anyone out there did get a chance to record all five nightline segments and has the capability to make a copy of their tape I'd very much like to get a copy of this. I would be willing to send a mailer with postage on it plus extra tapes for your trouble and effort. I'm not concerned about editing, commercials, etc.

Thanks.....DCK

Speaking of Echelon, apparently there is a plan on Oct. 21 to overload their system. The plan is to include as many of the "key words" into your E-mail, and the system will come crashing down.

I don't know if it will work, but it's sure worth a try.
