mpeg-2 and DV format

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I am intrigued by the new iMac DV with built-in software for editing DV movies from camcorder through firewire connection. I understand that DV movies are in mpeg-2 format. My question is how can I convert my regular tapes to DV format ?. Can I use ATI All in one wonder 128 which digitizes in mpeg-2 format and then use software to convert to DV format ?.

Thanks. Kiam Oey

DV format is MPEG2. The reason they call it DV is because it is on a digital tape. It is esier to call it DigitalVideo(DV) than MPEG2. You simply use the All-In-Wonder to capture the video and viola you have DV.

The imac website recommends the Sony Media Converter DVMC-DA1 which has a built-in firewire port to convert analogue source such VHS into DV (MPEG-2, as I learned from Lone Ranger's answer) and transfer it to the computer.

How to convert this DV format (MPEG-2) into a VCD compliant MPEG-1 format?

I am thinking of buying an iMac DV with the Sony converter and a CDR burner to make VCD from VHS tapes if the I can find answers to the above questions?
