Effective resolution of XL1's 16:9 mode??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Shooting DV Films : One Thread

I can find very few specs regarding this recording mode (even in Canon's slick PDF brochure). Exactly what difference in res. is there between shooting a masked (to 16:9) 4:3 image or shooting in the electronically squeezed 16:9 mode? Thanks.

Jason,

The difference is minor. The only difference is that the squeezed mode stretches the image vertically BEFORE DV 5:1 compression. This is slightly better as available compression space is not wasted on black bars, it is instead all used for the image. In short, it is as though the image were slightly less compressed.

Check out the Optex website for a 16:9 anamorphic lens. Century Optics does one too but it's supposed to be slightly inferior.
