A confirmed 2-day bump-in-the-road contingency plan

A close friend of mine, a reformed polly, faxed me an internal memo from Honeywell Defense Avionics Systems (Albuquerque, NM) today. Heres the body of the text.

Date: August 30, 1999

To: All Employees

To minimize any disruption to our business as a result of potential power issues related to Y2K, Defense Avionics Systems will be closed from Dec. 27, 1999 through Jan. 4, 2000. This represents an additional two days to the previously announced year-end shutdown schedule.

We fully expect to return to business as usual on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000. However, we will ask all employees to call a special telephone number beginning noon on Jan. 4 to be certain we are ready to return to work. If, for some reason, the telephone system is not working, we will use local communications media, such as television and radio, to get the word out to employees. Finally, we are investigating alternate means of communication should the above avenues be unavailable at that time. We will provide all employees with more detailed information as we get closer to the shutdown period.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact (name removed) at ext. (removed) or (name removed) at ext. (removed) in resource administration.

p.s. Should "None of the above" be feasible, we are developing an alternative backup plan".

My employer has a similar plan. Our "unofficial backup method" od communication is smoke signals. When you pull out of your drive and turn towards work, if the city is on fire due to riots and looting, don't bother to come into work today.

My brother works for Honeywell and he stated that this is a normal practice at Honeywell. I know that MCI is giving their employee 2 four day weekends at the end of the year and they have never done that before...
