Personal Y2k Risk Analysis - Electricity

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Electric Utilities and Y2K : One Thread

It seems like even at this late date, I still receive questions several times a day requesting a Y2k assessment of someone's local electric company. As noted many times before in this forum, I can't possibly keep up with all of the thousands of individual electric companies in the U.S. But hopefully, a tool that I designed earlier this year can help you to perform this analysis yourself. I created a "personal risk analysis" document earlier this year that serves as a good starting point for evaluating the Y2k readiness of your local electric company. You can apply the same concepts to gas, water, and telecom, as well.

For those of you new to the forum (or oldtimers who may have forgotten), the risk management document can be downloaded from the Energyland.net website under the Year 2000 heading - then click on the "Resources" dropdown box. The document is in Adobe .pdf format, so make sure that you have the Adobe reader installed (there's also a link on the page to download the free Adobe reader if you don't have it).

If you have any comments on the document or questions about how to use it, drop me a line. It's fairly self explanatory, though - I've tried to make it as easy as possible.

Again, it's just a starting point - but it will certainly get you engaged in doing more research and contacting your local utility service providers.
