Looking for Y2K rural rental in North Central Florida

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I realize this is not the reason for this board, but I'm getting a little concerned at not finding a place to rent. My mother an I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida. We were originally intending to head for the eastern mountains of West Virginia before the end of the year. We've now figured we won't have enough money to get that far, and would like to try finding a rental in the north central part of Florida, away from big cities like Gainesville, Jacksonville and Ocala. So far no luck, in part because we own two large (albeit well-mannered dogs).

If anyone on this board has any leads on a 2/1 or larger house for under $700, would you please let us know. We would be extremely grateful. It doesn't have to be glorious. Indoor plumbing would be nice, a roof without holes, but beyond that, we're open. Thanks!

CD- I also live on the Gulf Coast of Florida. If you're determined to leave these beautiful white sand beaches I would suggest you contact Real Estate agents at your desired location. Many of them either manage rental properties or can give you names/phone# of those who do. Good luck with your house hunting.

Thanks, CD. We've already tried real estate agents and property managers from the Tampa area to Live Oak. The moment they hear you have dogs, the answer is almost always no. We have had two people suggest mobile homes to us, but considering how unsafe these are in inclement weather, we're going to keep looking for a house. Even if we didn't consider our dogs to be a part of the family, we wouldn't give them up. We're two women alone, and they've proved their worth in the past.

WHY THE FU*CK ARE YOU WAITING UNTIL OCTOBER 1, 1999 TO MOVE AND TRY TO SAVE YOUR SORRY ASS? YOU DESERVE TO BE LEFT OUT THERE HANGING. DON'T GIVE ANY OF US ANY SORRY ASS EXCUSES!! Fed up with the "too little, too late, susies."

Okay now, let's hear it from the "come to my house I'll take care of you crowd." Any takers????

Hey "on your own budd" -

Did you come up with this yourself? Because it looks like vomit.

We did not intend to be too little too late. We've known about and been studying Y2K for over a year. We would have moved long before now if we had the money, but last year we were ripped off in a real estate scam (when we tried to move) to the tune of $15K. It has taken us more than a year to come back from this. We're still not back to where we should be, but we are working very hard at it.

This is how I did it.... look upon the internet for local newspapers (classifieds) and chambers of commerce. It's the BEST way! But the bad news is that it takes quite a while to get what you're looking for. It took me over four months to find a suitable rental property! Good luck anyway, you never know what will turn up, and when... JAKE

For many years I lived at NE FL/GA border. Maybe you should consider going over the border into Georgia. Go inland. Rents should be reduced somewhat. (Remember Gainesville is a college town and I expect the kids will go home for break. Check out the population when they're gone.) I understand the nuclear plant is at Clearwater, FL. Stay away. You might want to dodge Kingsbay, GA (NE FL/GA border). Isn't that one of two trident nuclear missile bases in the world? (Other in Spain.) Lots of country in GA unless it has changed. Grew up there as a child. Eat buzzards. They are ugly! Best of luck from a southerner.

Meandi, the nuke plant is at Crystal River, not Clearwater.

Look around Keystone Heights; maybe Perry; maybe Waldo. Small towns good people. In particular Keystone.
