Polly Poll!!

Well, we've pretty much reached the end of the road re: remediation. That is, time's up for inventory, assessment and remediation - only time left for testing (6 weeks) and implementation (6 weeks.) Care to answer a few questions? *Is the pit in your overall Y2K stomach smaller or larger than when you first starting 'engaging' the forum inhabitants? By how much, and why? *Where are you on the Yourdon scale now? *Are you considering any (further) preparation? *Have you, or do you intend to suggest preparations for loved ones? *Do you believe any debunking you did was successful? *When is your anticipated debunking/participating stop-date? *Was TB2000 any sort of positive learning experience for you? *Comments, suggestions? (As a polly antagonist, feel free to let me have it any which way. I probably deserve it.) Bonus Question:
*Do you really think the IRS will preserve its current functionality? Thanks for hanging with us, guys. It was a fine spectator sport while it lasted. [honest smile]

Good questions - here, let me format them for you:

About the same - a small pit, but still there. Not that I've 'engaged' much, I mostly lurk.

Between 1 and 2.

I'll pick up more canned stuff as I go. I want to be in the 3-4 week range on food & drink by EOY.

Have suggested a little cash on hand and a full pantry.

No, not really.

When it stops being interesting.

Yes.

Suggestions, for what they're worth: 1) Calling every word from government or business "spin", while taking every Milne/North/Yourdon comment at face value is at the very least inconsistent. It is at worst intellectually inexcusable. Question EVERYTHING.

2) While questioning everything, don't fall into the trap of thinking that no news is always the worst of all possible news. Nobody's going to go on record saying they're 100% compliant. Ever. That doesn't mean they're "toast".

3) Please consider the idea that "polly" does not equal "I discourage preparation". While you're at it, please consider the possibility that the red-faced spittle-spraying crap coming from Milne has done more to discourage curious visitors here from prepping than anything from Flint-Decker Co.

Yes.

Hey, thanks, Randy.

Glad you surfaced!

Lets number them so they're easier fro our polly brethren to respond to:

I cut and pasted the questions in there! I swear I did!

At least we all know what a prisoner on death row may feel like with 3 months before his sentencing!!

Just get here already. Tired of waiting, anticipating, stalling, reading,no productivity (other than gold purchase). Depressed,(no just, lethargic)!!

wait,wait,wait,wait, ticktockticktockticktock.

what a waste of a year.

1. Is the pit in your overall Y2K stomach smaller or larger than when you first starting 'engaging' the forum inhabitants? By how much, and why? Smaller for Y2K. I dont think much if anything will happen. Bigger in another way. I am very surprised (though I shouldnt be) at how many people who are totally clueless about technical subjects yet think they know how things work. Really really know. Check out the threads on the squirrel. The amount of ignorance combined with lack of logic is staggering. Do you really think, as an example, that an Oil company would put a vital chip where it couldnt be reached? Things fail all the time Y2K or no Y2K. You arent going to risk a multi-million dollar oil rig on the basis of one chip that must work and cant be reached to be fixed. Yet people here actually believe that. Amazing.

2. Where are you on the Yourdon scale now? Somewhere between a 1 and 3. I think there will be some problems. I dont think they will affect the vast majority of people.

3. Are you considering any (further) preparation? No Ive never done anything specific for Y2K. Nor has anyone Ive worked with by the way. I live in an earthquake zone and I prepared for that a long time ago. Anything done for Y2K specifically is superfluous. Pollies arent saying dont prepare. I think they are saying dont prepare specifically for Y2K. If you live in California and you are worried about Y2K but havent done anything about the possibility of a major quake your priorities are screwed up. Ditto if you live (in the country) in a cold climate. It shouldnt have taken Y2K to make you think about what would happen if you lost power.

4. Have you, or do you intend to suggest preparations for loved ones? See above.

5. Do you believe any debunking you did was successful? Among the committed (pun intended) no. To a passerby, maybe? Who knows?

6. When is your anticipated debunking/participating stop-date? That depends on when Y2K passes and nothing much happens if the people on this forum try to take credit. Yes, yes nothing happened because IBM lurked on TB and took our advice. Yeah, right. Also I suspect that anything that happens around the roll over that has nothing to do with Y2K will be attributed to Y2K. It wouldnt surprise me at all to see someone run up a huge credit card bill and try to get out of paying by saying its a Y2K screw up. Dont think itll work myself. I look for outages during a heat wave next summer to be blamed on Y2K. (That transformer didnt blow up. It was a Y2K cover up). I was talking to a friend from another Utility and she made the comment that they are just hoping that there wont be a winter storm about 1/1/00. No matter how much damage, people will blame Y2K.

7. Was TB2000 any sort of positive learning experience for you? Made me think more about security. . 8. Comments, suggestions?

No, just be prepared to be wrong. And not just a little wrong.

(As a Polly antagonist, feel free to let me have it any which way. I probably deserve it.) Bonus Question:

9. Do you really think the IRS will preserve its current functionality?

Dont spend all your money.

Why not - the telecoms put them on billion dollar satellites all the time. Can't just get to those fellas with a boom truck you know...

Your 1999 tax return MUST be postmarked NO LATER THAN April 15, 1900.

Is the pit in your overall Y2K stomach smaller or larger than when you first starting 'engaging' the forum inhabitants? By how much, and why? -I rarely attend the forum anymore except every few days. Very little interest anymore in Y2K as compared to 1998.

Where are you on the Yourdon scale now? -I would guess 2 to 4 still. Definate problems will occur and it will affect large groups of people but many will also have very little notice of the date except for the usual inconveinces that we face everyday.

Are you considering any (further) preparation? -I'll probably pick up more canned goods but I always have 4 days or more of food on hand if something happened.

Have you, or do you intend to suggest preparations for loved ones? -No its a personal decision. I don't tell people not to prep or too prep. Do you believe any debunking you did was successful? -Probably not, but I never set out to change the world or make a quick buck either.

When is your anticipated debunking/participating stop-date? -Whenever I get tired of the debate or when the entertaining people quit the Y2K train.

Was TB2000 any sort of positive learning experience for you? -Yeah in a way it was fun to see how others think.

Comments, suggestions? -Nope since the forum will probably begin to die out after Jan 1st.

Bonus Question: Do you really think the IRS will preserve its current functionality? -The IRS actually functioned before hand? Still for the flat tax of 16%.

But they arent totally dependent on them. The satellites have back up circuits. If they fail there are back up satellites and land lines. Everything doesnt stop at the loss of one chip.

"The Engineer" probably isn't even a real engineer, and even if he is, he's the biggest government shill this side of Hoffmeister and Flint. Shill, shill, shill Mr. Engineer. Nothing can go wrong. Don't worry, be happy. Blah, blah, blah. Sleep, sheeple, sleep.

-- Shill Detector (noone@nowhere.com), October 01, 1999.

Don't belive I'm an engineer, why? I believe you are a real shill?

Im not selling anything. No gold, generators, food preps, nothing for sale. Im not even selling advice. No books to sell either.

And there is a big difference between saying nothing can go wrong (I never said that. Airplanes do fall out of the sky from time to time and it has nothing to do with Y2K) and everything is going to go wrong at the same time.

Well see whos right. Thats the nice thing about Y2K. It is a definite date. And you cant say wait until next year. Somehow a Y2K+1 problem doesnt have the same ring to it.

Yes indeed. Well see if you are eating your preps next year. Or crow.
