China Says U.S. Pushing Taiwan Toward War

By Jeremy Page

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji lashed out at the United States over Taiwan Thursday, saying its support for the estranged island had emboldened President Lee Teng-hui and was making war inevitable.

Using harsh language, Zhu surprised a gathering of top foreign business executives by saying U.S. policies had encouraged Lee to declare in July the island would only deal with Beijing as a political equal.

``Sooner or later it will lead to an armed resolution of the question because the Chinese people will become impatient,'' one participant quoted Zhu as saying.

Lee said ties with Beijing should be conducted on a ''state-to-state'' basis. China, a bitter rival of Nationalist-ruled Taiwan since the end of a civil war in 1949, saw the declaration as a ``dangerous'' lurch toward independence.

Chinese leaders, including President Jiang Zemin, have said repeatedly that Beijing reserves the right to use force to prevent the island from formally breaking away.

The United States has been equally insistent that the Taiwan issue must be resolved peacefully. Any Chinese action on its threats would be of ``grave concern'' to Washington, it said.

RARE PRONOUNCEMENT

Zhu raised the Taiwan issue again at a reception to mark the 50th anniversary of the People's Republic of China Friday.

``We are convinced that with the concerted efforts of the entire Chinese people, the Taiwan question can definitely be resolved at an early date following the return of Hong Kong and Macao, and the complete reunification of China will be realized,'' he said.

The Portuguese enclave of Macau is to return to Chinese sovereignty on December 20. China reclaimed Hong Kong in July 1997 after more than 150 years of British colonial rule.

Both have been promised ``one country, two systems,'' in which they will remain capitalist and have a high degree of autonomy.

Diplomats said they did not believe Zhu's earlier comments represented a tougher new policy, but they were startling because Zhu, who directs the economy, rarely makes pronouncements on Taiwan and foreign policy.

They were also delivered to an audience containing many Americans on the eve of the anniversary and in the unusual context of the Fortune Global Forum, which brings together some of the biggest Western corporate names.

``We got to the end and Zhu went into a long and somewhat passionate tirade about Taiwan and he said the United States has to quit emphasizing that it must be settled by peaceful means and implying that it would help defend Taiwan,'' said the participant.

``He said it with a bit of passion,'' said the participant, who declined to be identified, after a question-and-answer session with Zhu at the Great Hall of the People.

``He was making a point of clearly having a prepared thing to say about Taiwan and when nobody asked him a question, to deliver it afterwards.''

TIMING A PUZZLE

Diplomats said they were puzzled by the timing.

``Perhaps they decided this was the moment to send a message to the U.S.,'' said one Western envoy. ``Perhaps he has been chosen to give this tough message because Jiang Zemin wants to play the nice guy and does not want to give these tough messages.''

Another Western diplomat said: ``It's odd to do that in that context. It's possible Zhu's been told to say something on Taiwan but he may have got a little over-enthusiastic.''

``It's not within his daily work.''

He speculated Zhu may be trying to talk tough on Taiwan to gain leverage in talks on China's entry to the World Trade Organization, now at a crucial point.

``I suspect this may be related to the WTO talks -- he's trying to ratchet up the pressure on the Americans,'' he said.

Washington recognizes Beijing as the sole government of China but continues to sell arms to Taipei.

In March 1996, the United States sent two aircraft carrier battle groups to the Taiwan Strait as China held missile tests and war games off Taiwan to intimidate voters into rejecting Lee in the island's first direct presidential elections.

Huh? Is this the same Taiwan that is in shambles after the earthquakes? This is getting too strange.

Sounds like China is setting the stage.

Don't you love the way politicians (the world over) talk and think ? As though the average Chinese citizen gives a shit. They're all slaves with or without Taiwan.

And what the hell are we going to do about it...Nothing absolutely Nothing!! The old men in the powerhall of the Politburo are strickly speaking a bunch of power-mad superstitious old peasants, who find it easy to stay in power through intimidation and blackmail. You can't tell me that they don't.

The Chinese Government has long been a major threat to the planet as a whole. If one looks at history, a truly united China has never really existed in modern times. First thing that scares the hell outta me is the fact that they have bought off both sides of the political schemata here in the states. Lets face it... They OWN slick Willy and his Democats, and the Republicans are just as dirty. Interesting how the Dems are now spilling on the campaign finance violations of the Republicans when TPOTUS is questioned hard on the violations occuring on his side of the fence. The Reps are unwilling to really chase down the Dems, cause they (both sides) know they are all equally dirty. This allows the Chinese to effectively controll ALL of the behind the scene actions. They do what they want, and the Government won't 'fall'

Anyone want to bet if this is the case or not? Divide and conquer. Thats the chinese goal. They want nothing more than to be the Dominant force on this planet with in the next 50 years.

They are attempting to gain control of the Panama Canal. They have attempted to arm LA streetgangs with sophisticated military grade weaponry, from type56 rifles to RPGs. They have attempted (and successfully so) to drive a wedge in the American Belief in Government. For God sake, the President himself, in what was once considered to be every American Boy and Girls dream job, has managed to Prostitute both himself and the Office that so many held dear to nothing more than a 'B-Girl Job' in a cheap third world bar... May God have Mercy on us all...

....casu we be F**KED!!!
