Bug warning on president's plane

With the millennium less than 100 days away, there have been hitches in preparations to counter the computer bug which could cast a shadow over the celebrations.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni could be grounded on 1 January 2000 because his personal jet has not been fixed to cope with the millennium, or Y2K, bug, an MP said.

Mike Mukula, himself a pilot, accused the government of negligence over the presidential Gulf Stream III.

"Because of the sloppiness of government in the management of its affairs, an executive jet which carries the president stands to be lost because someone is not doing his job," he told `The Monitor' newspaper.

In Kenya, the government's Y2K committee may have wasted more than $500,000 by buying itself nearly 400 non-compliant computers.

"Divisions have emerged within the committee over the issue. Sources say the committee ... could actually have bought computers that do not meet Y2K compliance standards," KTN television said.

Millennium mint

A more optimistic note was struck in South Africa, where the central bank said it had printed enough cash to cope with extra demand over the millennium holiday.

Its currency chief, Dirk Putter, said it had estimated normal December demand and tripled it.

There was already 75 billion rand (about $15bn) available for the end of this year, against some 25 billion the same time last year, Putter said, according to Business Day.
