Got your RDV? (Revised Denominational Version)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Christian Church : One Thread

Hey Preachers!

I have an idea for a sermon...Help me with the content!

Intro: There are a lot of translations of the Bible, but for the most part, they are all in agreement. But the Bible that most people really use is what I call the Revised Denominational Version. I would like for you to take out your Bibles, and compare as I read selected passages from the "RDV":

Matthew 16:18 "Upon this Rock, I will build my churches, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against them"

Ephesians 4:5 "There is one Lord, many faiths, and many baptisms"

Acts 2:37ff "Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, 'Brethren, what shall we do?' And Peter said to them, 'Repeat this sinners prayer after me, accepting Jesus into your heart for the forgiveness of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'"

Acts 8:36 "And as they went along the road, the Ethiopian eunuch looked at Phillip's canteen and said, 'Look, water! What prevents me from being sprinkled?'"

Acts 20:7 "And once a month, when we were gathered together to break bread..."

OK folks... how about some more?

The following is a true story that illustrates your point quite well: Jacob Ditzler and J. S. Sweeney (a Gospel Preacher) were having a debate on the Scriptural mode of baptism. Ditzler showed that a secondary meaning (per modern definition) of the word "baptize" was "to sprinkle." In reply, brother Sweeney showed a secondary meaning to the word "believe" (per modern definition) was "to have an opinion," and a secondary meaning of the word "saved" (per modern definition)was "to be pickled." Then he gave the resulting translation of Mark 16:16: He that hath an opinion, and is sprinkled shall be pickled.

Is it our aim to see what we can make out of the Scriptures, or is it our aim to find out what God has said?

Now that's a keeper! In fact, it qualifies as an illustration for this very sermon! Thanks.

Matthew 28:19-20 RDV

Go ye therefore and get all nations to say the sinners prayer. Teaching them to observe the Westminster confession, and lo, once you are saved you are eternally secure.

Mark 16:16 - Select the one best suited to your needs:

A) Whosoever is saved shall believe and should be baptized . . .

B) Whosoever believes shall be saved and should be baptized . . .

C) Whosoever is baptized and many years later believes shall be saved . . .

Somehow in this new RDV we must make it known that anytime that baptism is used in connection with salvation, it means that Jesus spiritually baptizes us the moment we believe, and it absolutely has nothing to do with water.

Also, you might want to use the Billy Graham translation of Acts 2:38: "Repent and be converted . . ."

One other thing, up at the top you have "Acts 2:37ff "Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, 'Brethren, what shall we do?' And Peter said to them, 'Repeat this sinners prayer after me, accepting Jesus into your heart for the forgiveness of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'""

That is mis-stated. It should read "...for the forgiveness of sins because the Holy Spirit is leading you."

The way you had it, it sounded like the Holy Spirit didn't come into a person's life until they said the sinners prayer. Why, we all know that the the Scriptures dont exactly say that but it meant to.

Just another thought.

A few years ago I heard a denominational preacher reading the story of the rich young ruler in Luke 18:18-22. When he got to verse 22, instead of reading what Jesus truly said, he said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved."
