money out of bank, but too much to bury

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Ive heard many responses to what people should do with their money after they withdraw it from the banks. But what if someone has a very large amount? this issue has come up with someone close to me. surely he wouldn't want to just bury that much ( not because of losing the interest) but it just seems there should be another answer. thanks!-dory

Simply convert all the money into gold and silver and bury it. A Y2K crash will greatly increase the value of this buried treasure! A million dollars of gold will fit in a brief case!

Search the archives, we have had entire threads devoted to ingenious ways to hide your cash. Generally speaking, most folks feel that cash will be king for at least most of the year 2000, under even the worst scenarios, since that is what people are used to. Gold and silver would emerge after this in a worst case scenario (say 2001ish) as they get introduced into bartering, and then may set the standard as a "new" monetary system.

the wise answer is the old one: don't put all of you eggs in the same basket and don't tell anybody about what you'll do..

dory, feel free to tell him to send me some of it to watch for him. I promise to take good care of it and all my systems are nearly 99% compliant ; )

Suggestions: 1. keep part (cash) in a fire-proof safe along with vital documents. You can buy small safes with various ratings (minimum 2 HR) for surprisingly little that are also transportable. 2. Keep some cash in a safe in a fairly obvious location (I always liked the wall mounted safes behind pictures). 3. Bury some in sealed glass containers-w- moth balls inside sealed PVC pipe sections in a vertical hole. Dig some decoy holes and scatter anything metal-toys, used files, 10 penny nails (like 5 or 6), even bottle caps at varying levels as you fill it in. 4. Bury some in a location on your potential travel route that is accessible and somewhere you are not normally found. Use local landmarks or even a GPS to mark it.
