If you are trying to cook on a wood burning heating stove that is air-tight, you may have trouble getting the top hot enough to boil water. We have an older Jotul 118 airtight box stove, and we can simmer stews and soups on the top, and it will keep tea kettles of water hot, but unless there is a roaring fire in it (and we only do that if it is cold out- like 40 below zero) the top doesn't get really hot. If you are talking about a cook stove, it takes some practice and small pieces of good dry fire wood to get a real hot fire. Ours will boil water easily, but you have to work at it to bake pizza at 450 degrees in the oven. The Countryside magazine reference is a good one, or check out Carla Emery's book.
