What about satelites?greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread
Several people I know have considerable money invested in a company that has been putting up satelites. They have put up 40 around the globe and will have a total of 48, with the last 8 to go up with 4 in Oct and 4 in November. Now they are asking me...like what the hell do I know?...about satelite compliancy. I would bet the farm that these 48 will be compliant in any/all ways. But what about the ones that have been around for a long time? Don't they have embedded chips or dated code?
Taz...who is not going to pay for another year of HBO if it ain't gonna be there!!

What are "satelites"?
My cable company uses satellites to beam me over-priced and very poor programs...
Just kidding around,

Taz ... With the solar storms ( ionization plumes fom the sun ) expected to crest in Janruary, I would not have a NICKLE invested in these sitting ducks ! On the subject of " looking ahead " , I have turned down dozens of people trying to interest me in spending money into the " unknown " (?) of next year . I will close my checking account as soon as my teachers retirement check clears in October ( about the 2nd ) and let my wife write all my checks till Janruary settles the score with the DGIs ( AND my DGI wife !) Also have a credit card company that took 3 months of calls and letter writing to supposidly close the account. However, they are still sending me checks to use . IF I can see it ' going down " in late December, THIS stupid company, that let a company incorrectly add charges to a supposidly closed account, ILLEGALLY, will get their ' come upance' , as they say here in the Northeast. We should all do a little future look ahead, and if it looks like a sure meltdown, ' bet the farm ' , using their money (credit cards, checks and cash advances) for those last munite articles (hardware, tools, etc.) while the rest of the ninneys are fighting over the food that isn't there . " Class will tell "; and so will being a GI ! Eagle

But Hal isn't that stealing?

Hal, the checks mean your account is "sort of" closed. They are hoping you use one of the checks - in which case the account is really open. Pull a TRW or Equifax report and see if they show the account closed. Those dang banks keep sending me checks 6 months after I closed the accounts. I rip them up immediately.
Taz, I agree the new satellites are probably OK for Y2K, but could fail during the solar maximum at yearend. Your friends may want to cash out soon.

Get a letter from the credit card company saying the account is closed.
