Grocery Stores - did you notice a change yesterday

I was just wondering if any of you noticed any empty shelves at your local grocery store yesterday?

I went to a local store early yesterday evening. This store usually has items stacked to the roof, but yesterday it was different. Where the canned veggies were, huge bare spots. It was a surprise to me, as there are always tons of canned veggies there. They weren't having a sale on them either.

Just wondering what the rest of you spotted....

My local stores are very full. No one is buying bulk, not even stocking up on the great sale items. My DH is just to the point of saying hand over the checkbook because I do take full advantage of any great sale.

My store is having a case goods sale this week. They SPECIFICALLY say that it is not y2k related.

Nope:

They all have sales on DelMonte veg [corn, beans, etc]. The shelves are not only full, but they have the stuff everywhere. This is not one company but three.

Best wishes,

WalMart had a bare bagged rice shelf, but plenty of beans and everything else. Maybe their JIT didn't JIT with the rice this week. But this nosey old lady is always checking out everyones cart looking for ' comrades in the aisles.' Well, in the check stand next to us while checking out there was a very young couple with a toddler. They had two carts full. Her cart was totally packed with Kotex. His cart had 6 gallons of white gas, 6 pks of 2 each of the propane cylinders and 6 1/2 gal jugs of lamp oil. That was it for them. We laffed as I figured they had made a list and each payday they went and bought all they needed of one or two items. Chubby Hubby said, " I hope they are well down their list and y2k doesn't come early" Too us it was a strange way of buying things, but when you are young and on a strict budget maybe you have it all figured out down to the can of green beans and its easier to buy ALL of one item at a time. But other than that, I never see anyone buying for y2k.

Ahhh, a Del Monte sale! I have been buying White Rose things. The things I tasted of theirs seemed good and of course it's a cheaper brand. I like the pineapple in natural juice--very good.

Canneries will be moving out stocks as their warehouses fill up with this fall's harvest. There should be some good buys out there for the next month or so.

At this point we only buy the specials if the price is really good. 99 cent corned beef sounds great. We haven't noticed any shortages of anything.
