greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

I have now completed the conversion of most of the senate report. There is a brief note about the intentions of my posting. There maybe some that would figure that I was preaching to them, specially the regulars. But it was posted the way it was for the benifit of the many and in no way would I consider "preaching to the converted".

Please if you don't like the report or want to flame me do it here not on my senate post. I would like to have it up for the lurkers and those that may want to read the information and have never been to the forum. It is difficult for us regulars dealing with the details and the disputes to realize that there are alot of lurkers out there that need some kind of relevant information so they can deal with the problem. I still remember my days lurking on CSY2K and sorting through the personal contrivercy. Lots of fun but not productive :o)

It is difficult to spread information on the net and we have to get the information out. That is why I chose to post the report on this forum rather than my site. Any little bit has to help :o) So here is a few hours work to bring this info from the depths of PDF (GAG). I hope it helps.

Main focus? Get the word out.

Thanks

many many thanks for all of your effort, brian

"Oh, Canada!

Our home & native land.

True patriot love,

In all they sons' command!"

Thank you for your efforts, Brian. It is one thing to have love in your heart. Quite another to express that love. Peace be with you.

P.S. I'm Canadian in spirit, Brian. Actually, mom was born & raised in Saskatchewan(sp). I grew up with a great respect for, and a bit of a yearning to move to Cananda. Alas, I've had to settle for occasional trips to Montreal to watch my Flyers beat up on the Canadiens. :)

Brian, you're the greatest. I know what a true pain in the ass that must have been for you to do. Put a gold star on your computer monitor!

-- pshannon (pshannon@inch.com), September 23, 1999.

Heck, put 5 gold stars on that 'puter Brian and a mug of something frothy!

Many thanks!

Whatcha' think about a new category? What to call it?

Diane

Thank you very much Brian and pshannon, because I feel your work goes hand in hand in this instance.

I have saved most of it on 3 1/2 and printed out several copies of the summary, and will print out the other parts as the topics come up in talking with folks. The summary I am going to try to get printed in the local news paper as a letter to the editor. (Wondering if that will fly since it is so long, but I don't like the idea of chopping it up?) And Brian, I hope you won't mind if I copy/paste to a local web site your hard work?

Pshannon gave us links to mainstream media news coverage. I just don't understand how anyone can read these news report snips and compare them to the full report and not see how the media is "chopped the report up" and is making decisions or having the decisions made for them about what we should/shouldn't know. I find this very disturbing whether the topic is Y2k or any other topic.

Perhaps as we find other media coverage, national, local and internet, we can add the links to pshannons thread below.

Media Coverage of the Latest Senate Report

Awesome work Brian, the gold star themselves are impressed. Thanks!

-- Chris (#$%^&@pond.com), September 23, 1999.

Brian,

That is way cool dude. I suddenly felt as if I was at a hockey game. Thanks for the formatting, now I have no excuse not to read the rest.

Deb

pshannon,

I really thought you did a great job with yesterdays coverage. And I've been meaning to tell you how great it was to find your single page format of the State Dept. travel adviseries. Way cool, dude.

-- Deborah (infowars@yahoo.com), September 23, 1999.

Immeasureably valuable contribution, Brian. Your work is permanent in the archives!

-- Ashton & Leska in Cascadia (allaha@earthlink.net), September 23, 1999.

Thank you Brian, much appreciated!

-- Tiara (sorceress5@hotmail.com), September 23, 1999.

Brian,

Excellent work. I hadn't had time to download and read the pdf files yet and your work will allow me to avoid having to do so.

More importantly though, you'll allow a lot of people without Adobe Acrobat to view the report and I think this is very important.

PDF was not meant for this kind of usage. It makes no sense to me why this form is used other than that it provides information to become public at a slower pace if at all.

Thanks Brian!!!

Mike

Time for another lurker to lose their virginity.

In way of introduction I have followed Yourdon for over a year but only two days ago started looking at the discusssion forums. I deeply appreciate the additional information and insights that are here and recognize the work that so many of you have put into your responses.

I am a GI expecting between a 3 and 7.

Questions: 1) (Easy) What is a "meme" 2) Steve Hewitt (possibly misspelled) What is the take on him? Without an involved essay what are his basic worldview errors according to his opponents. 3) Any idea of how many people follow these discussions?

Thank you for your time and efforts !!!

Questions:

-- Dana (exlurker_in_California@GI.com), September 23, 1999.

Dana, to answer your questions:

1) I can't say I'm exactly sure what a "meme" is, but as best as I can figure out it is some kind of "psychobabble" that tries to say that you believe certain things NOT because you actually are able to REASON but rather because you are simply pre-disposed to believing that way. Pollyannas, especially the more stupid ones, are always trying to claim that THIS is what makes people worried about Y2K, NOT other stuff like bad computer code that will fail.

2) He is moron.

3) Just a few with nothing better to do.

A few questions for you: Are you really a virgin? Can I help liberate you? Do you mudwrestle??

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.com), September 23, 1999.

Thanks King:

Thanks for answering Q's one and three.

Yes I would be willing to mudwrestle with you but only because I need the exercise. My wife would insist on being the referee.

Any help on understanding S.H. ?

-- Dana (exlurker_in_California@GI.com), September 23, 1999.

Brian, you are awesome!

-- mabel (mabel_louise@yahoo.com), September 23, 1999.

Dana,

Steve had an opportunity to defend himself here:

-- Deborah (infowars@yahoo.com), September 23, 1999.

Brian,

Many thanks for your time, effort and determination to get the information out. Thanks also for your intelligence and caring.

-- Leslie (***@***.net), September 23, 1999.

Dana, LOL!

-- A&L (too@tired.too.often), September 23, 1999.

KOS

A gender identifier might be helpful huh.......

Too funny!!!!!

Deano

-- Deano (deano@luvthebeach.com), September 23, 1999.

LOL KOS! Was about time that you get cought with that mudwrestling obsession of yours :-D

Dana,

1) meme: : an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture (Webster Dictionary).

2)Don't know

3)See "Lurkers Please check-in" thread at http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=001R Rm for an overview of who's lurking and posting on this forum.

-- Chris (#$%^&@pond.com), September 23, 1999.

Dana, here's an example of "Polly meme" from another thread:

"Lurkers: Has any of the information from this board changed your opinions on the severity of Y2K. I am wondering whether or not the information that is supplied on this board been beneficial or not. Has anybody been persuaded one way or the other from your previous view of y2k?

-- y2k dave (xsdaa111@hotmail.com), September 23, 1999

Answers

Yes. Since absolutely no evidence has been produced to back even one claim of expected catastrophy, and since all predictions to date have been gross exaggerations, my expectations of the severity of Y2K has plummeted from minor to insignificant to practically non-existent.

Regards, Andy Ray *************

His mind has obviously been made up that this forum is populated by "doomers" and any hard data/facts posted are biased/wrong. He probably regarded Ed Yourdon as completely wrong right from the start even before he first came to this forum. IMHO, ofcourse.

-- Chris (#$%^&@pond.com), September 23, 1999.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!! KOS got caught that time! Better stay out of NC boy...you might find the mud a little more than you bargained for.LOL Actually I am just in a SNIT as I have NEVER ONCE been offered the opportunity to mud wrestle with KOS.....huummmmmph!! BRIAN, me lad,..... you will never know how grateful this computer illiterate old lady is for the work you have done. I can download, but for some reason I have lost the capability of opening the files. I soooooooo appreciate your translating and posting. I have just sent it on to my broker who is just now becoming a GI. God Bless

Taz

-- Taz (Taz@aol.com), September 23, 1999.

Yes, thanks so much! Very important reading.

:-)

-- mar (derigueur2@aol.com), September 23, 1999.

Wow

Thanks alot folks! All I did was read and edit in a HTML editor. That is why the US. Gov. info isn't on there because I didn't need to know that :o) I would have read the report anyway.

Bingo

Ya Canada is pretty good. But try the west coast, alot warmer than Saskabush. We have a terrible hockey team though.

Patrick

Hope you put a link on your site to the Senate Report here. Thanks for the support but you are doing more than I am research wise.

Diane

Didn't imbibe yet but I may have a beer later in the evening. As for a new category .... try 100 days and counting?

Lilly

Please through it on another website!. I am hoping that folks do it.

Mike

I HATE pdf, think it is some kind of consparicy against the common folk that don't have laser printers.

Dana

1 a meme is an obsession with little basis in fact, almost takes on a life of its own.

2 Steve isn't worried about Y2K because he thinks it is the end of times.

3 No idea.

You just sucked in KOS with a non gender name :o) That should make him think twice, or maybe not.

Leslie

I am not intellegent. Intuitive maybe.

Deano

Nice to see a polly on the thread with no flames :o)

Chris

AR is a twit.

Taz

Always glad to help out the youth challanged :o) Just keep posting what you know and I will post what I know. We will all work together.

-- Brian (imager@home.com), September 23, 1999.

Brian: Oh, yeah (before I got needlessly sidetracked), thanks for the awesome conversion so that us WEB-TVers (who can't handle PDF documents) can read the report.

Taz: Do you like to mudwrestle?

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.com), September 23, 1999.

$20 on Taz...........

-- Will continue (farming@home.com), September 23, 1999.

Brian,

I'm usually not one to flame. I'll speak up when I see something that I consider absolutely absurd and only then. Couldn't pass this one up though.

Maybe we should start calling him QOS??? :-)

Deano
