Newbie to VCD... need general help

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi all. Is there a special way that I need to place the .dat files on the video CD before I burn it in order to get my DVD player to recognize the disk as a VCD? Are there any other files that I need?

Thanks,

Joe Cooper ajsystems@jps.net

Joe its interesting that your posting is immediately above my posting about asking similar questions.

To save the moderator having to answer: All of the placement of files on the vcd occurs in the program used to burn the vcd. Winoncd seems more reliable than adaptec.

All you have to do is create the compliant mpeg-1 file on your hhd and drag it into the burner program and it will all be done for you - well maybe.

Playing it on a dvd player may be quite another problem as you will learn if you scan this site there are those that play CD-R's and those that do not!

its a good policy to try before you buy!

Happy days

Do not drag and drop a Video CD. This means that you should let the CD-R(W) program make it for you. Get WinOnCD and use the Video CD wizard to make the disc. If you do it from scratch the disc will be useless. Also DVD players are finiky towards certain CD-R and CD-RW brands. Check with the manufacturer before hand. Note: All dual- laser/dual-pickup DVD players can read CD-R and CD-RW with no problems. Philips has started to put dual lasers in all of thier DVD players. Sony does it for higher end machines. Pioneer, Panasonic, and RCA avoid dual-lasers.

Hi Lone Ranger, what I meant by drag & drop is during the wizard process for winoncd 3.5 one is asked to select the mpeg-1 file and I thought that picking it up with the mouse and tranfering it to the next window below was "drag & drop from 2 to 3". Sorry if that is incorrect or should I be using cut and paste from 2 to 3 or another process?

I should have been more clear. If you use the wizard you can drag and drop the files. If you are doing it by hand like Joe wanted to do, you will mess up the CD. It is best Joe to let the wizard in the program guide you through and produce the CD for you.
