Do you have your own personal "CONTINGENCE PLANS" in case Martial Law is declared

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

A lot of Martial Law posts today. The military and our government always have contingence plans for what could be classed as "worse case scenarios". For many of us Martial Law would be a worse case senerio. How will we who "get it" plan for Martial Law.

They are just contingence plans and lets hope we never have to test them.

"CONTINGENCE PLANS" should include DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer for your state.

DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer is available for all fifty states and includes back roads, trails, paths, lakes and much more detail than you will find on any other map. They can sometimes be found at K-Mart and Office Depot and on the web at http://www.delorme.com/

Martial Law may not be such a bad idea after all. It will keep muggers and looters off the streets in the cities, but it may not keep the neighbors and people from surrounding neighborhoods knocking on your door. I talked my sister into nailing carpet tacking strips along the top of her fence so no one can jump over it, it works great! Try to figure out what the weak points of your home are for intruders and take care of it now.

Does anyone have any specifics as to what "martial law" really is? I know we don't want it, etc, etc- but what IS it?? Thanx-

-- farmer (hillsidefarm@drbs.net), September 22, 1999.

Farmer, I'll get the explanation started and hopefully others will add or correct what I say.

In martial law the govt declares a state of emergency. The military under the direction of FEMA takes charge. All regular laws can be suspended. It is the ultimate police state. They could close roads, blockade cities, ration gas & food, curfew etc. They call the shots. Presidential Executive Orders and directives will no doubt be invoked. The Pres. has these in place that suspend the constitution, and basically they can tell you what to do, where to do it, take your stuff, and shot you if you resist. Think of it like living in Germany under Hitler. It could get to that extreme. I can't think of a better leader to do it under, can you?

Running to the bathroom now, gonna be sick........

Bill,

I don't understand your comparison between martial law and Hitler? Please explain it better for us.

You people are unreal!!!!! lets see 270 million people to be controlled under dire circumstances by how many (deserting) military men??? It is laughable----ya gotta go beyond that. If it gets that serious there aint no way the gov. is going to be able to control anything baby no F***in way.

USE YOUR BRAIN for gods sake.

Martial law nearby? I will mind my own business until my back is pushed against the wall. Hopefully (for their sake) the uniformed assistance would be of service and not to our detriment. I do see scenarios where they could be extremely useful. I see scenarios where they might royally screw up. In the larger scheme of things, a large- scale, nationwide martial law scenario will likely entail instances of both. It would take many months for organized resistance to get together, I suspect, and would have to involve widespread defection of nat guard and other .gov police.

But it's unlikely much of this would happen, just Because. It sounds like an interesting sci-fi movie but i have a hard time fathoming it on an intuitive level. I suppose you hard-core GI's would say that I am in denial, and that's okay...

According to d.b.'s reasoning, it is impossible for any country to ever impose martial law. Nonetheless, martial law has been imposed on many countries at many times.

Yeah, BUT!

In those countries the people didn't/don't have guns. See why they want ours so bad? And please don't have a spasm over martial law, there are just not enough troops, period. Just half of the larger cities would take ALL (and then some) of our armed forces. You people spend waaaaaaaaaay to much thought on this.

-- don't look back (on the @lam.com), September 23, 1999.

Well, we got some discussion now. DB, let me ask you, if it goes to a 7 or 8, what would you do if you were in charge? What other options will they have? The sheeple have acted out for less than this.

Whether or not they have enough troops to do an effective job will not be a reason not to deploy if there are major social problems. There will be no judges and juries. How could there be?

Granted these are worst case senarios, and hopefully we won't ever get that far. As far as the comparison to Nazi Germany, it will be like the "your papers please."

Don't underestimate the force they could employ. Count in local police, fire, animal control, all alphabet agencies, reservists, any govt employee with military experience, etc and you could put a larger force than you think. Yes, there will be deserters, but just shoot a few of them, and the others will think twice about that too.

Again, this is a worst case. I don't think we will get there, but then again, who knows? If you were CIC what would you do?
