199A off camera synchronization

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon FD : One Thread

I would like to move my Cannon 199A flash off the camera to avoid having red eyes. I need to buy a Sync Cord A, which B&H has for sale. However, I am a very newbiew to the AE-1P & 199A system that I have. I wonder if the dedication is lost when I move the flash off camera. In other words, I get the f/stop from the camera's viewfinder after attaching the flash. Will I be able to do this still after I move the flash off the hot shoe?

thanx in advance peter

The Synchro Cord A plugs into the PC outlet and allows one to use the 199A flash off camera, but the auto flash features will not work with this setup. You would have to set the flash to Manual.

For about $35, you can get a cord which has hot shoe connectors on each end, which will allow the flash to remain dedicated.

Peter,

The cord you are looking for is called a Duo Sync cord. This passes all three contacts to the flash so it works just like it did attached to the hot shoe.

They run from $20 on up, if you can find one. Sometimes you can find them on eBay, or in the dusty back reaches of some camera stores.
