image sclaing

could someone please try to explain image scaling to me? i take quite a few digital images which i eventually intend to print, but even the few that i have emailed to people are sometimes too big to open or distorted in some way. the images on my screen are fine. i am baffled by scaling! are there any tricks to understanding?

thanks!

Make a copy of your image, then change the resolution to 72dpi, then resize it to a smaller size (maybe 8x10 or smaller). It should now be a much smaller file size for e-mailing

Ok, I have no answer for you on image scaling. However, before doing the above, are the files saved as .jpg files before you email them? If so, in your editting software, try to save the files in an uncompressed format like .tif or .bmp , that way, when you change the dpi as suggested above, the picture will not get distorted as much. Then, save the image back to jpeg format.
