Digital Camera vs. Digital Video Cam

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Just as I thought I figured out which digital camera to buy, I saw igital video cams that claim they can save hundreds of still shots per tape. My question is: how does the picture quality of digital video cams compare with digital cameras? I'm cosidering an Olympus 450 or Epson 700 (maybe HP C30) that produce res of about 1280X960. Can dig video cams produce res of that magnitude, and are they as easy to download?

Most digital video cameras cannot match the number of pixels that your average good quality Digital Camera has. Eventually they will get there, but there is always the chance that just because a digital vid camera can produce mega pixel pictures, does not mean the Quality will be up there

The Sony PC100 (available soon?) has 1152x864 resolution for stills. However, it will cost more than twice as much as a still camera. It has a 10x zoom, so for distant subjects, it will give much better resolution than 1 or 2 megapixel cameras with 3x zoom at the same distance. But so will the FD91.
