Late evening sky

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

Nikon F90X - 60mm lens on a Gitzo tripod - Kodak E100VS rated @ 100 - aperture f/8 and shutter speed 8s. The image shows Venus high in the late evening sky west of La Push - Olympic NP. I tried to frame the compositional elements according to the rule of thirds.

I really like a lot about this picture - nice colors, nice textures and Venus adds a nice touch. But I keep feeling a little unbalanced by the black foreground - trees, etc. It needs to be there but there doesn't seem to be quite enough of it - I actually think a vertical with the same width would be perfect.

First forget that rule of thirds crappola, there are no such rules. You have a good eye for composition use it, what bothers me is that just about everything lacks sharpness, as was suggested next time try a vertical composition and use a speed fast enough to keep the clouds from blurring. Pat

I love the colors and what was attempting to be captured here, but I too would like to see more of the ground to anchor the picture. Keep shooting! Donna

I agree with Donna. Lots of nice elements and if you could have included enough mountain foreground to connect the two mountain tops it might help. Keep shooting!

The composition is disjointed making the eyes jump around too much. Also, the hill in the lower left corner should be blacker--I see a lot of "noise" in the black on my monitor.
